THERE WON’T BE MUCH TRICK OR TREATING THIS HALLOWEEN…

In a year where every person’s life in the entire world has been touched one way or another by the dreadful Covid-19 pandemic, all we can do here at PHTM is to continue to bring you updates on the various facets of the industry where changes have been brought in as a result of this virulent coronavirus, and reflect on the implications of those changes.

This month we’ve examined the effects on our industry of the Government’s extensive and well-budgeted-for Cycling and Walking Plan. Try to keep a straight face (No! Why not have a laugh!!) as you read about the various areas where they’ve widened the cycle lanes and left traffic stranded… where roads and bridges are blocked off on top of all the additional cycle lanes and widened pavement obstructions… where doctors are to prescribe riding a bike.

Contrast that against the very serious verdict – right at the last minute, press deadline-wise – of Westminster Magistrates’ Court that Uber London Ltd has been granted an 18-month private hire operator licence in the capital. In this edition we bring you reaction from every quarter of the industry and beyond, and leave you to speculate as to the implications several months down the line. As always, as in PHTM Facebook, we welcome your reactions and opinions – and how the outcome might affect your business.

Check out the NPHTA column this time, where director Dave Lawrie examines the growing trend of local authority penalty point schemes. For the longest time these were somewhat of a novelty, not used by many councils… but the momentum is gaining speed as more and more local authorities are jumping on this particular bandwagon. Our licence holders are not amused! – to say the least. Read why inside.

As an addendum to our ‘cyclist/pedestrian rules OK’ feature, we’ve also looked into the current Government-backed scheme involving the use of electric scooters. Well, what a to-do! As if licence holders didn’t have enough to worry about, we now have scooter rental schemes popping up all over the place (and we’ve listed where), legalising the use of e-scooters on roads and… cycle lanes! OMG… mind the doors please!!

Last month we featured news of a mega-demo in Manchester city centre, where literally hundreds of taxis and PHVs joined forces to join a slow drive-through to protest about the blanking by Transport for Greater Manchester and the Mayor’s office of the local taxi/PHV industry in the matter of negotiations on both CAZ charging and unified licensing schemes across the ten Greater Manchester boroughs. Well, they achieved a result… ultimately… there is to be a meeting held on 2 October with TfGM and the Mayor, Andy Burnham. That is six days before the next public consultation is to be kicked off… so what does that suggest to you? A foregone conclusion, as TfGM’s website material and questions will have already been formulated and set down? Again, we’ll keep you posted on any developments.

And of course we’ve got loads of our regular features through- out this bumper edition. Aren’t they all?

Have a good read, and stay safe. OCTOBER 2020 LOVE IT
