WIDENED PAVEMENTS ON EDINBURGH’S PRINCES STREET
Police have cracked down on taxi drivers ignoring widened pavements in Edinburgh city centre. Additional space has been made for pedestrians at north end of Princes Street as part of the council’s Spaces for People. The initiative, which has seen temporary road closures elsewhere in the city, aim is to allow pedestrians to social distance on the city’s street, while making room for queuing and outdoor seating at bars and restaurants in places. However, not all drivers have been adhering to the new rules, with Edinburgh Live previ- ously reporting that Victoria Street had emerged as a hotspot for vehicles flouting the closure. And now police officers have sent a clear message to taxi drivers who continue to pick up fares at a previous taxi rank outside the Balmoral Hotel following a slew of com- plaints from residents. MEN CHARGED AFTER WICKFORD ROBBERY
Two men have been charged after a taxi driver was robbed. Police were called to Appletree Way at around 2.45am on the morning of Sunday 13 September. The vic- tim had suffered bruising and swelling to his face. Two men were arrested at 11.30am the fol- lowing morning. Roy O’Donoghue, 39, of Finchley Road, Westcliff, and Kevin Hutchinson, 34, of Appletree Way, Wickford, were arrested the following morning and have been charged with robbery. They are next due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on Monday October 12.
MAN ROBBED DRIVER IN NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE
A taxi driver and passenger had a lucky escape after the taxi they were travelling in crashed into a sign on a busy roundabout near Newport, Shropshire. The vehicle was involved in a crash at the junction of the A41, the A519 and the B5062 Forton Road at about 8.45am on Thursday 24 September. A signpost crashed through the windscreen on the passenger side but neither the driver or passenger were seri- ously injured. Ambulance staff said that two patients were being assessed but appeared to have suf- fered only minor injuries. The road was made clear by about 10.30am. West Mercia Police also attended and asked that anyone who saw the collision and has information to call 101 using the reference 98/I of September 24.

A 23-year-old Staffordshire Moorlands man is set to appear in court after a taxi driver was robbed. Samuel Thomas Egerton has been charged with robbery and a racially aggravated pub- lic order offence - police have announced this afternoon. A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: “On August 4 2019, a taxi driver, on a jour- ney between Dilhorne and Cheddleton, was robbed by a passenger who used threaten- ing/abusive/insulting words or behaviour which was racially aggravated. “A video of the incident was circulated on social media in January 2020.” Egerton, of Grange Road, Cheddleton, is due to appear before magistrates at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on November 12.

MAN FINED FOR WALKING DOWN M65
A man was spotted walking along the M65 near Burnley recently and when he was stopped by officers and asked why he was walking along the road, he explained that he had run out of money for a taxi. A police spokesman said: “A little-known fact is that beer tokens also work as taxi tokens. One gent found out the hard way after spending all his money and trying to walk home along the M65 from Burnley. He was removed from the motorway by #HO54 and issued a £50 fixed penalty.”
MCR DRIVER SMASHES THROUGH BARRIER
A taxi has been driven through a barrier at Manchester’s Piccadilly railway station. The black hackney carriage crashed into the metal barriers at the station's taxi rank on Fairfield Street on 9 September. Network Rail, tweeting from the Manch- ester Piccadilly account, said: “Our friendly staff are directing passengers to a tempo- rary taxi pick up point further along the street. "The area will be cordoned off while we make the repairs. "Be safe. Be patient. Be kind."
