So, there will be drivers with the app open, and probably other apps open as well, driving around negotiating fares that ping up and entering into a bartering system with the customer. Surely this is the slippery slope? Surely this means the lowest bidder gets the job? Or have I missed something?
Here in the city we have always worked
extremely hard to maintain a cost-effective hackney tariff of fares with regular negotiations with Licensing. Historically, these metered fares have been in force by the main local companies and applied to the private hire vehicles as well. This meant the public has always known what they would be paying for a cab, either off the rank or via a booking.
But now it seems the model of this ‘revolutionary’ app is the race to the bottom which is pretty much the same as the ‘lowest bidder’ system now used by Uber.

Yet again the local Uber drivers… sorry that is misleading… the drivers from Lewes, Chichester, Portsmouth, Southampton, Fareham and Brighton & Hove, are still banging on in their Whatsapp group about the low fares they are getting.
On the day I am writing this, a national Uber strike is (supposedly) taking place and there are calls here for those drivers to not work. However of course, as in most cases like this, the majority of those drivers continue to plod on working and are then chastised by their striking colleagues for doing so.
I know what they should do!
Create their own association/cooperative and be masters of their own destiny! Now there’s a novel idea
