should tell is the editor of PHTM, – yours truly. With both my edi- tor’s hat on, and that of director of the National Private Hire and Taxi Association, the more collective clout we have behind each lobby, each campaign, each complaint… the more likely we’ll get an audience with the people who matter, the movers and shak- ers, the decision makers.

Thinking of another of Corporal Jones’ catchphrases, “Permission to speak, Sir…!”, whatever ‘officialdom’ we publish or circulate will have been given clearance from the relevant Government depart- ment – as with last month’s Clean Air feature from the Joint Air Quality Unit at Defra, and with the release of the Government response from the Department for Transport.

The well-established Meeting of Minds will have met specifically to discuss the Government response, and the draft Statutory Guidance, at the end of February after our press deadline; we’ll report on that next time. This group of industry stakeholders includes representatives from the DfT, GMB and Unite, NALEO and the Institute of Licensing, the National Taxi Association and the National Private Hire and Taxi Association (yours truly again). Busy, innit? – but a crucial part of reviewing what’s going on.

Don’t forget this as well: with over 27 years’ experience of stag- ing the nation’s annual industry exhibition, we can say without exaggeration that the best thing you can do to get the facts is to come to this year’s PHTM Expo at Arena MK. You’ll know by now that this year’s dates are Wednesday and Thursday, 12 and 13 June. You’ll also know that our now-famous Seminars take place on the first day (Weds 12th), and this year they will be covering all that’s topical and more.

With everything connected with the trade under one roof, it’s also a great day out! Year after year, groups come to the show by the busload… and of course if you pre-register, your entry into the

Expo is free. We’ll be reminding everyone on a regular basis that – at this time above all times – you’ve got to support your trade show, so you will know what is really happening both locally and nationally.

Back with my Association hat on for a moment, NPHTAmembers were supplied with electronic copies of the Government response to the Task and Finish report, as well as the draft Statu- tory Guidance, within minutes of this material having been released into the public domain. It’s a lot to take in, but we try to ensure that our members have to hand the latest information the instant it is available… and this is why we’ve offered an anal- ysis of the Government response in this edition of PHTM as well.

Now above all times, this is where you need to join the National Private Hire and Taxi Association; your support enables our activities to continue apace, and our collective voice to be heard in the right quarters. With all the misinformation that’s been bandied about this past few weeks, all I can say is this: As far as PHTM, and the NPHTA are concerned, we are proud of our trade. We’re here to promote the truth and dispel the rubbish; our cam- paigns for driver safety and Clean Air facts and Government response facts are all for your benefit.

As always, if you have something to say about any of the topics presented in this edition – or indeed anything connected with the industry – you know where to get in touch.

We’ll finish with yet another of Lance Corporal Jones’ catch- phrases, albeit taken somewhat out of context here: “They don’t like it up ‘em!” Members of our trade want the truth, not bull. And they do not like being misrepresented and pilloried because of the behaviour of a tiny minority. We shall endeavour to carry that message everywhere; that’s a promise.

Until next time, sayonara.
