FOUR YEARS EIGHT MONTHS JAIL FOR CARDIFF CABBIE WHO MUGGED ELDERLY WOMAN TWICE


An elderly woman was mugged twice by a cabbie who followed her home from a casino and stole her winnings. The woman was targeted by cabbie Yusef Mohamed who tailed her as she drove home from Les Croupiers in Cardiff. Mohamed, 38, robbed her in November and then again in January by grabbing the victim’s handbag before fleeing in his taxi, Thomas Stanway, prosecuting said. The second mugging has left the pensioner scarred for life after she suffered a large cut above her eye when she fell and was dragged across the floor. Among the items stolen was £1,900 cash, her house keys,


mobile phone and a camera with “sentimental” photographs. The victim had enjoyed going to Les Croupiers to gamble and socialise with her friends, Cardiff Crown Court was told. Mohamed, of Cardiff pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and one of wounding. Nadeem Majid representing him said his client had no previous convictions and had entered early guilty pleas. Lloyd-Clarke told Mohamed: “It’s clear that until very


recently you were a respectable, decent, law-abiding citizen. “You began to develop some financial difficulties and you thought that gambling would be the answer. But it wasn’t and you lost money and you began to develop a gambling habit. “This has turned you from a decent citizen into a criminal and someone who has committed serious offences – robberies against a vulnerable elderly lady who has suffered significantly because of your actions.” The defendant was jailed for four years and eight months and made the subject of a ten-year restraining order.


DONCASTER CABBIE JAILED FOR 18 YEARS FOR STRING OF SEX ATTACKS ON DISABLED WOMEN


A former Doncaster cabbie who subjected a pair of disabled women to a string of rapes and sex attacks has been jailed for 18 years. Derek Bilby, now 64, had built up a relationship with the victims, who both have significant disabilities, after picking them up in his cab. But he committed horrific sex attacks on the two “extremely vulnerable” women he had met through work. He continued to visit them at their homes, grooming them before carrying out his perverse acts over a two-year period. Both women told their carers what had happened, and Bilby was arrested. Following a complex investigation he was charged and in October 2022, he pleaded guilty

to one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, assault by pene- tration and inde- cent exposure. Investigating of- ficer, Alex Storey said: “Both of these women have significant, long-term vulner- abilities and are practically housebound. Bilby took advantage of this, coercing his way inside their homes before forcing himself on them on multiple occasions. “It’s sickening to know that both women felt they could trust him, and he took advantage of this. "We initially launched our investigation into Bilby in January 2020, after the first incident was


reported. With the help of speech experts to ensure the victims’ voices were


heard, detectives


carried out video interviews with both women. “Forensics also strengthened the case, with Bilby’s DNA being found on one of the victims, and on the other’s clothing.” Mr Storey added: “We can’t rule out that Bilby targeted other women when he worked as a taxi driver in Doncaster a number of years ago, and I would urge anyone with concerns or suspicions to come forward.” Bilby, formerly of Alexander Street in Bentley, was handed an 18-year sentence at Sheffield Crown Court and was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
