14 MONTHS’ JAIL FOR WEYMOUTH CABBIE WHOSE PUNCH CAUSED PENSIONER LIFE-CHANGING INJURY

A private hire driver has been jailed for a brutal one-punch attack which left a pensioner with a brain bleed and life-changing injuries. Robert Leslie Hathway, 46, appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court on March 26 to be sentenced for inflicting grievous bodily harm. On March 25, 2022, Hathway was driving along Weymouth’s Newberry Road in a work van when he stopped by the side of the road to check directions. Fellow motorist Peter Walker drove by and gestured at Hathway, angered by his van blocking the road. Mr Walker, 76, tapped on Hathway’s vehicle through an open window,

to indicate his frustration, and pulled over. Hath-

way got out of the van, ran towards Mr Walker’s car and punched him once in the face in what defence barrister Thomas Evans described as a moment of impulsive rage. This single punch, however, did serious damage. Mr Walker was rushed to hospital with a laceration and bruising to his face, but after being discharged his family noticed him slurring his words and becoming confused. A CT scan revealed that Mr Walker had developed a bleed on his brain, which required surgery in April to relieve the pressure. The

long term consequences are likely to remain and the victim has lost his driver’s licence and much of his independence as a result of Hathway’s anger. Mr Evans stated that there was an element of provocation but that Hathway expressed “deep remorse” for what had happened. Her Honour Judge Evans KC handed Hathway a 14-month prison sentence, and declined to suspend it. She said: “There is strong mitigation here and there would be a serious impact on the family but these factors are outweighed in my view and an appropriate punishment can only be achieved through immediate custody.

OLDHAM DRIVER CAUGHT WITH PANTS DOWN WITH WOMAN IN BACK OF CAB CHARGED WITH SOLICITING

A man has been charged by police following an alleged incident involving a female in the back of an Uber PHV in Rochdale. Greater Manchester Police investigated after a video was circulated on social media. Officers have now charged Mohammed Jamal, 37, of Shaw, Oldham with soliciting. He has been bailed ahead of his appearance before Magistrates on May 4, 2023. Jamal has also been banned by Uber after the video emerged appearing to show him with his trousers down in the rear of his cab with the woman. In the footage, Jamal is seen to pull up his pants before repeatedly saying ‘I’m sorry’ and driving away.

The mobile phone footage was shared widely on social media, the man shooting the clip is heard to tell the driver: “Yo, what you’re doing? Brother, what are you doing? In the month of Ramadan and you’re doing stuff like this? What the f*** are you doing? This is disgusting. What are you doing? I’ve got kids inside here.” Capturing the badge and the registration of the Toyota Auris, he is heard to add: “What kind of taxi are you? You dirty b***ard.”

Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd told the M.E.N: “It’s clear there has to be a proper investigation into this. Uber has said they are investigating and that’s good. An Uber spokesperson said: “We are horrified by what is depicted in the video and are taking action. We have banned the driver while we investigate and are working directly with the police.” A Rochdale Council spokeswoman said: “We are liaising with GMP with a view to acting on any information they share with the council.” The force confirmed the charge related to an alleged incident involving an adult female in a PHV in Thames Street in Rochdale in the early hours of Sunday, 9 April.
