BOLTON PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER FEARS FOR HIS SAFETY AFTER BEING PUNCHED BY PASSENGER

A private hire driver feared for his life after being punched when picking a customer up. The Bolton News reports that Imtiyaz Mataq, who works for Metro Cars, asked two men to take their feet off the seats. But instead they became irate and wouldn’t listen to him, he says. When he dropped them off, one of them punched him from behind, and the other opened the drivers’ door and punched him in his face. He said: “I’m still suffering, and I was really shaken up on that day and I had to take the day off. It made made me

scared to go to work. “Action needs to be taken against them, because I don’t want this to happen to some- one else. “At the moment there is no one there to protect the drivers.” Both men ran off without paying their fare, he added. Police officers have stressed that they

are investigating the incid- ent, but haven’t yet identified a suspect. Nick Astley, owner of Bolton-based Metro Cars, said: “Incidents where drivers are being attacked and physi- cally injured are happening every few weeks. Our drivers have been putting up with so much and it’s been horrific. “We feel very let down by the police. “We want to feel that something is being done.” Chief Inspector Martin Ashurst, said: “I have set actions for the officers in charge of the investigation to provide urgent updates to the victims.”

GIRL ARRESTED AFTER NOTTINGHAM CABBIE ATTACKED WITH A BOTTLE

A girl has been arrested after a cabbie was hit over the head with a glass bottle. The Westbridgford Wire reports that driver had picked up a group of girls and midway through the journey, he stopped to check some details of his fare after reportedly hearing a discus- sion about payment. An altercation is then believed to have

ensued and a girl reportedly hit him over the head with the bottle. It is also reported his phone was stolen during the incident. The man was left with cuts to his head, but is now recovering. Shortly after, a 15-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of robbery fol- lowing the incident, which happened in

Watcombe Road, Mapperley, at around 8.20pm on Thursday 17 February 2022. Detective Constable Ben Hensell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Nobody should have to face being subject to violence, especially when they’re sim- ply trying to do their job, so it is appalling to hear of this behaviour that has been reported to us.”

face and a black eye. A 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman from the Barnstaple area were arrested on suspicion of robbery and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries. As Chris is currently unable to work, an online fundraiser has been set up to help with the loss of earnings and to put towards a well-earned break. It has been set up by Liane Taylor, a tenant and friend of Chris and has so far

raised over £1,500 of a £2,000 target. She said: “Chris is a very well-known and respected person around Barnstaple and many people in this town, love and respect him dearly. “He’s pretty much been taxi driving all of his life. Nothing like this has ever happened to him before. Obviously, during Covid, it was been financially difficult for him so I’m just trying to raise some money with the GoFundMe as he needs some time off to recover.”
