groups where I believe in some areas the rate is as low as £1 per mile. I know, its a joke!


So, if Uber can charge near on £2.60 per mile here, what is there to stop it charging at least this rate elsewhere other than to undercut the local trades and continue with its predatory pricing.


DOOR SIGNS / LIVERY


Word on the street is that a certain union is backing the removal of door signs/council required livery as appar- ently the claim is that having these: ‘Does not contribute to the safety of passengers’.


I understand that one supporting argument is that TfL does not allow its licensed PHVs to have such door signs and as such then this must be perfectly acceptable with regards to the safety of passengers - according to some.


This doesn’t really equate because TfL also allows anyone to drive a TfL licensed vehicle without holding a TfL driver licence. When I found this out a few of years ago I was literally gob smacked that this was ever allowed to be the case. This is not allowed outside of London under the Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1976, and quite rightly so!


And nowadays as we have TfL PHVs predominantly working out of area with no TfL Enforcement and no markings (other than what can only be described as the totally useless unidentifiable roundel) this makes any claim that unmarked PHVs do not contribute to the danger of passengers as laughable!


I’m hoping that the full details of this union’s backward step to pre 1976 on public safety is fully announced soon. Maybe a report on this via that union in PHTM giving the full justification would be a good idea.


DOING IT LOCALLY


At Brighton & Hove Streamline Taxis, which is an owner- driver association, we had young 12-year-old Zach contact us as he told us he was our “Greatest Fan” and really loved our big cabs. So earlier this year we gave

him a tour of our operations centre, which we have had since 1936 in the centre of Brighton. We also gave Zach a working taxi meter to keep. We then invited him back a few weeks ago as he is soon to leave the UK. As a surprise we got our friend Tony Turner, from Radio Cabs, to pick up Zach and his mum in his electric London cab, which is the only one in the city, and bring him to our office where we had our other ‘big’ cabs there for Zach to look around. We also gave him a customised ‘Zach’s Cabs/Streamline ’ jigsaw puzzle.


The point being is that being local cab companies we can do things like this and take the time and get involved on a local basis. But I wonder how long this will continue when the local companies will be wiped out by the unions now that they want every cab operator to employ the drivers (Limb-B). This will then make running a local cab company uneconomical to do so with only the multi-billion dollar companies who can afford to left running this trade.


I suppose the old adage is: “Be careful what you ask for... as you might just get it”


Meanwhile, I bet fuel has just gone up again at that supermarket in the time it has taken you to read this....
