CHARITY CORNER
KIND-HEARTED CABBIES FLOOD EDINBURGH WITH COLOUR AS TAXI KIDS OUTING RETURNS AFTER TWO-YEAR BREAK
Kind-hearted cabbies flooded the streets of Edinburgh with colour as they treated children to a day at the seaside in the annual Edinburgh Taxi Trade Kids Outing. The Scottish Sun reports that drivers dressed as Iron Man, Bat Man and an Oompa Loompa took part in the Edin- burgh taxi outing – which returned
after a two-year break due to Covid. Around 60 taxis, most decorated with balloons and streamers, made their way from Edinburgh Zoo, through Princes Street, and then out to East Lothian in what was the 74th outing. The charity event takes hundreds of sick and disadvantaged children on a colourful, extravagant parade through the city streets and on to the seaside for a day out they’ll never forget. Drivers go to incredible efforts to dress up their taxis with whatever they can get their hands on. Kids used water pistols to soak onlook- ers and even turned them on the motorbike cops who escorted them on their journey. The taxi outing began in the wake of the Second World War in 1947 and has continued ever since. Prizes were awarded for best taxi float,
balloon taxi and fancy dressed child and taxi driver at a ceremony with Lord Provost, Cllr Robert Aldridge, on hand to judge the competition. Organisations supported by the outing include The Richmond’s Hope Trust, Cash for Kids, Sick Kids Friends Founda- tion, Edinburgh Zoo’s Dreamnight and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
BRADFORD PH FIRM’S AMAZING GESTURE TO PUT TOUGH TIMES OF COVID BEHIND US BY ORGANISING SEASIDE TRIP
Taxi and private hire firms are having a tough time with rising fuel costs but one Bradford private hire company is splashing out by funding a day out to the seaside for 140 people. According to YorkshireLive, Local Cars of Wibsey is to pay for three coaches to take dozens of less fortunate and vul- nerable people to Scarborough for the day on August 14. In a Facebook post owner Kaz Shehzad said: “Hopefully, the tough times of Covid-19 are behind us, and Local Cars would like to ‘put a bit back into the community’ to appreciate your help and support over the last couple of years. “You, as customers, as well as the local community have all been through tough times one way or another, as well as local businesses, but most of us have

got through it by all pulling together, and we need to put a smile back on our faces again. “The management at Local Cars has decided to fund a trip to the seaside, for those less fortunate or the vulnera- ble within the community. A lot of people cannot afford a day out to the seaside, so let us assist with this by paying for the transport. “Local Cars will fully fund the cost of the coaches, and we are aiming to pro- vide a maximum of three coaches which will provide approximately 140 seats for children, families and the elderly of the community. If you think that somebody or a family would appreciate a trip to the seaside for the day, please contact us. “We would also appreciate any volun-
teers that would like to come on the trip as well as any adults that have First Aid Training. If you, are you aware of any local community groups that would benefit from this, please ask them to get in touch as soon as possible. “Please can you share this with within the community as I am sure that you will all know of an individual or a family that would benefit from a day out to the seaside.” The gesture has been praised by nearly 80 people with one woman writing: “What a lovely thing to do, I would be interested in going with my mum and kids” while another woman added: “What a lovely thing to do. I hope it’s a raging success and the local community will really appreciate the very generous gesture.”
