DRY JANUARY, VEGANUARY… HOW ABOUT PROTESTANUARY?

That would just about sum up the trade’s activities over the past four or five weeks. During a month that is supposed to be the least pleasing weather-wise, and the most depressing (wasn’t the 20th “Blue Monday”?), it has also heralded quite a collec- tion of protest actions and rebellions amongst various factions within the industry.

You will have seen on our front page the report of the mass demonstration that was held by joint private hire and taxi licence holders on 15 January aimed at Leeds City Council, during which they highlighted the potential financial hardship that could be caused to licence holders by the adoption of the council’s proposed “points policy”: so many points on your DVLA and you’re offsky, but can’t reapply for your badge for another three years.

Taking that a stage further, our main feature in this month’s PHTM examines more closely the origination of such proposals: the Institute of Licensing Suitability guidance document. We have contributions from far and wide with their take on the situation, as well as a response/rebuttal/justification from IoL President James Button.

So what do you think? Do you believe that a couple of speeders should amount to a driver’s losing his livelihood for three years, as proposed in Leeds – or indeed five years, as suggested by the IoL guidance? Check out the reactions not only from other industry representatives, but also the comments from the Leeds postings on the PHTMFacebook page. And we’d absolutely turn cartwheels if we could add your reactions and comments to those we’ve already received. Go on… get your SMS and key- boards out and send us some words.

Back to this edition, we’ve covered every and all departments good style: Round the Councils, company and driver profiles, Know Your Rights, Taxi Law Explained, World Wide and Uber… the whole works, as usual. Oh, and a bit of news thrown in, from all over the place. Unfortunately a lot of it is about stabbings, GBH, vehicles being stolen, racial abuse against drivers – but as you well know, that’s the reality out there. It would be so fan- tastic if we could convince more vehicle proprietors to invest in the full monty: a proper in-car CCTV system. Time and again it’s been proven to be the best deterrent out there.

Now then: it’s never too early to talk about the next PHTM Expo. This year’s dates are Wednesday and Thursday, 3 and 4 June; the venue is the same as last year: Arena MK (now called the Marshall Arena) in Milton Keynes. Exhibitors are already booking their spaces, knowing that the hall will fill up mega- quickly. We’re giving the Seminars a bit of a shuffle and changing their style, to bring a breath of fresh air to a very informative programme. So, ‘Seeking Solutions to Survival’ - visit the Expo: ‘Your Route to Revitalising Your Business!’

You owe it to yourselves to support your trade! – and the best way to do that is to come along to the biggest, best, most informative industry event in the country: ‘The One and Only’. You might even win some dosh: there’ll be cash giveaways throughout the event.

Come and join us, and have a great day out. FEBRUARY 2020
