The small bus builder Mellor launched their new electric drive Big-Taxi concept at BusWorld in October 2019; Pico's first appearance in the U.K. will be at the PHTM Expo in June this year.
Mellor is part of the North West based Woodall Nicholson Group and U.K.’s third-biggest bus building company. With
a turnover of £100M in 2019, the Woodall Nicholson Group is one of the U.K.'s leading manufacturers of innovative passenger vehicles as well as specialist vehicles and have adopted their low floor technology to a genuinely accessible M1 taxi. As a result, Pico meets the demands of the emerging ride-hailing and first and last mile ride-pooling markets driven by mobility as a service (MaaS) solutions, which are rolling out across Europe’s cities such as London, Birmingham, Hamburg, Helsinki and Berlin. The Pico passenger experience and its functional design coalesce with urban mobility services sold through smartphone applications, especially in environments regulated by public transport authorities (PTA’s). With regards to MaaS implementation, it is commonly accepted that PTA’s are in the best position to deliver MaaS services through private businesses working within an agreed single ticket infrastructure. To achieve commonality and compliance, Mellor believes that future designs will mix passengers with society's desire for wide diversity and to include “all”, the able, the non-ambulatory and those who are dependent on wheelchairs. Current taxi designs, which are often used within ride-hailing and ride pooling networks, often fail to deliver faithful DDA compliance, single step and wheelchair accessibility. The seven- seated Pico has an electric sliding door as well as a great passenger experience, which is created by the high roof height and flat floor that facilitates access to individual seats. Wi-Fi, USB charging, different media screens and A.V. systems
are also available to enhance both passenger experience and operator brand. The all-electric Pico operates at 3.5 T GVW. However, in some qualifying countries, the Pico is available at 4.25 T GVW where government actors issue ‘B’ licence drivers with dispensation and where GVW is increased to compensate for battery weight. Picos' battery system is configurable to align with the operators charging infrastructure. The front-wheel-drive system facilitates the low floor design, which is a highly self- developed system and is standard across the Mellor small bus range. Future developments include a battery 'swap' technology to allow larger taxi fleets to 'refuel' by changing batteries (in under eight minutes). 'Swap' is a system in early development with the help of a power generation partnership. Pico is also available in a Euro V1 diesel variant and fully automatic eight-speed Z.F. gearbox.
