TERRIBLE ATTACK ON UBER DRIVER RESULTS IN HIS SUSPENSION DUE TO FALSE PASSENGER COMPLAINTS

A Somali Uber driver was the victim of a violent attack by two customers recently. The driver, a member of UPHD, told his passengers that he was not able to extend their journey and go to a second destination as they requested. The passengers then hit him with a bottle and their fists repeatedly. The driver was left hurt and terrified and with a damaged vehicle. The matter is now with the police. Shamefully, a few days later, Uber

suspended the driver after the passen- gers submitted false complaints about him. According to UPHD, this is typical of Uber and other operators where drivers are treated like second class citizens and not believed when inci- dents such as this happen or if drivers themselves make a complaint. UPHD says that this has occurred too many times and has to change. “Enough is enough Uber!” The union says that it is supporting its

member and will fight to ensure he is reinstated by Uber and supported through these issues. It calls for swift action to stop these attacks on drivers. The UPHD also demands that Uber implements a fair and proper complaints process where drivers are given credence when they report abuse and where any suspensions or dismissals follow a fair process. “We won’t stop until we get justice,” the union says.

TAXI DRIVER LEFT LYING IN THE STREET AFTER ASSAULT IN NOTTINGHAM CITY CENTRE

A taxi driver was found lying in the street following an assault in Notting- ham city centre. The Nottingham Post reports that the man was allegedly attacked from behind after a dispute with customers when stopping on Castle Meadow Road, Broadmarsh, at around 12.15pm on Sunday 31 October.

Passers-by stopped to help and called the emergency services before the man was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing. Detective Sergeant Chris Berryman, from Nottinghamshire Police said: “This behaviour is unacceptable, and we will always act swiftly when we receive

such reports like this. Police said a man, 18 and a 14-year-old boy were arrested in Clumber Street in connection with the incident. A knife was also recovered and the 14-year-old was further arrested on sus- picion of possessing a bladed article. They have since been released on con- ditional bail pending further enquiries.

THUG BATTERED LIVERPOOL PHV DRIVER THEN WARNED AROUND HERE WE’LL SHOOT YOU

A thug carried out a frenzied attack on a PHV driver while he was a passenger in his vehicle, causing the victim to lose control of the car. The Liverpool Echo reports that Kieran McKechnie beat Mohammed Ammanu- lah numerous times while riding in his car and later told the Delta driver “around here we’ll shoot you”. Mr Amanullah said his life would “never be the same” after the attack, which Liverpool Crown Court heard was triggered by a conversation between him and McKechnie about whether he was English. McKechnie, from Kirkby, had denied

inflicting actual bodily harm on Mr Amanullah but was found guilty by magistrates earlier this year and sent to prison on Monday 8 November. Recorder Taylor said the fact that McKechnie was not found guilty of racially aggravated offences meant the suggestion of a racial element to the attack would not be factored into sentencing. However, he said it was clear even from early into the trip that his comments had left Mr Amanullah “no doubt apprehensive as to where this was going” The judge said the fact that the attack

had been launched while Mr Amanullah was doing his job further convinced him that only a custodial sentence was appropriate.

He said: “People need to know that if they perform an attack on a taxi driver they will go to prison.” McKechnie was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay a victim surcharge. Aside from being left with cuts and bruises to his face and hands, Mr Amanullah said he was more nervous about accepting fares from people who had been drinking and that his family worried about him working.
