MANCHESTER CABBIE ATTACKED BY COUPLE AFTER REFUSING TO PAY CLEANING FEE
A cabbie claims he was attacked by a couple after one was sick in his cab and then refused to pay the cleaning fee. The Manchester Evening News reports that Koorosh Afshari said he was dragged out of his car and attacked after taking the passengers to Parting- ton, Trafford, from the city centre. He was left in tears with ripped clothes and scratch marks all over his body. Koorosh, 48, said after the female passenger had been sick in the back of the taxi he stopped and said he would
be charging them a cleaning fee. Angered, he claimed the male passen- ger then left the vehicle before he asked the woman to pay for the journey which took place on Saturday 20 November. He says she refused and only offered to pay £10 for the whole trip - despite it costing £34 and then £20 in cleaning fees. Koorosh was then dragged out of the car as he called police to report the passengers’ details. The taxi driver said: “He was shouting
at me and screaming and just opened the door and pulled me out. “I was in so much pain and was crying. I was on the floor and was trying to push him off” The argument caught the attention of a nearby resident, who ushered Koorosh into her house and called for help. Injured and with a painful shoulder, he drove himself to A&E where he was checked over and sent home. Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are still investigating the incident.
CABBIES’ WINDOWS SMASHED BY YOBS WHO TERRORISED AREA OF EDINBURGH ON BONFIRE NIGHT
An area of Edinburgh was terrorised by reckless yobs on Bonfire Night as they went on a violent rampage, throwing fireworks at passers-by, vehicles and riot police who were called in to assist. One man was even seriously injured by a firework during the mayhem. The Daily Record reports that student nurse Amy Dodds watched the chaos in Nidrrie unfold in horror after finishing her shift around 7pm at the city’s A&E
department in the Royal Infirmary. Amy, 24, told the Record: “I had just finished a shift at the hospital and I couldn’t get anywhere as it was all blocked off by police. “A taxi pulled over and I went to see what had happened. His two elderly passengers were already on the way to A&E as the husband was sick when the window smashed and the woman got glass all over her face. “I was going to help her but her
husband was very ill. Another woman stopped in her car and she took them to hospital. “Another taxi driver stopped as he had his window smashed as well.” Amy believes around 50 youths were involved in the chaos as they targeted people from various directions on Niddrie Mains Road and Hay Avenue. The chaos didn’t stop with the taxi drivers as one service 21 bus also had a firework thrown in the back window.
POLICE APPEAL AFTER TAXI DRIVERS ASSAULTED IN SKIPTON BUS STATION
Police are appealing for witnesses after two taxi drivers were assaulted on two separate occasions in Skipton. According to the Craven Herald, both incidents happened at Skipton Bus Station in the early evening, or late at night, and both saw taxi drivers being attacked while they were sitting in their vehicles. The most recent happened at around 6.10pm on Thursday, November 11, when the driver of a silver Ford Tour-
60
neo taxi reported to the police that he had been assaulted while inside his vehicle during an argument between two other men in the car park. On Saturday, September 11, again in the bus station, police received reports of an assault on a taxi driver at just after 2.30am. It allegedly involved a group of five boys, all aged around 15 years old, who attempted to get into the taxi. The taxi driver, from Bradford, was hit in the neck and face causing bruising.
Police have so far been unable to trace the youths. The chairman of Craven District Council’s Licensing Committee, which earlier this year agreed all taxis will have to be fitted with CCTV cameras by the start of next year, for the safety of both drivers and passengers, said the attacks were unacceptable and that cameras could have acted as a deterrent and provided police with vital information.
