DRUGS IN TAXIS

DRUG DEALER WHO USED BRIGHTON CAB TO RUN DRUGS JAILED FOR 22 MONTHS

A drug dealer will be deported to Albania after being caught using a cab to sell cocaine. According to the Argus, Lumture Spahiu was carrying 30 bags of cocaine while travelling as a passenger in a Brighton & Hove taxi. When the cab arrived in the Bevendean area, another man got in for a short time and a suspected deal took place. Officers from Sussex Police identified the taxi minutes later and stopped it at the traffic lights in Lewes Road. Spahiu got out of the vehicle and attempted to run away, but was tackled

by the specialist enforcement unit. He was found with grip seal bags containing cocaine hidden in cigarette

boxes, along with cash in his trousers and a burner phone. Officers took him into custody follow- ing the incident at around 8.30pm on September 25 this year. The 27-year-old was charged with possessing a Class A drug with intent to supply. Spahiu appeared before Lewes Crown Court on November 10, and was sentenced to 22 months in prison. During the investigation it was also found that Spahiu is an immigration absconder, and he now faces deporta- tion to Albania at the end of his sentence.

DRUG COURIER FOUND WITH £50K WORTH OF COCAINE IN PHV TRAVELLING FROM LONDON TO CARDIFF

A courier who travelled from Albania in the back of a lorry to escape poverty was found in a PHV with a kilogram of cocaine worth up to £52,000. Eldorado Dani, 37, had been in the country just three weeks when he was involved in two trips transporting large amounts of class A drugs from London to Cardiff in return for payment from a drugs gang. Police stopped Dani while he was travelling in a VW Passat PHV on the A48 in Cardiff on July 19 and when they searched the vehicle they discovered a bag containing a block of cocaine. It was later found to be 1.042kg of cocaine of 50% purity with a street value between £41,680 and £52,100. At a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court in October, Prosecutor Ian Wright said the Passat had been seen on the M4 in Slough at 9.15am on July 19 and was stopped in Cardiff at 11.10am. Dani was a rear passenger in the PHV with the driver unaware of the contents of the package. The defendant was also found in possession of £640 in cash and a mobile phone.

An investigation revealed the same PHV undertook a trip from London to Cardiff on July 13 and cell site analysis of the defendant’s phone confirmed he was in Cardiff on the day in question. He later admitted couriering another kilogram block of cocaine on that day. Dani later pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A drugs. He is of previous good character. In mitigation, Michael McAlinden said:

“He came from Albania, from poverty, and borrowed upwards of £10,000 in Albania to pay for the treatment of his sick father.” Mr McAlinden said the defendant was promised construction work in the UK but this fell through, his situation became “desperate” so he took up the offer to work as a drug courier. Dani was sentenced to four years imprisonment and was ordered to pay back £640.

COCAINE SEIZED AFTER MAN ‘BEHAVED SUSPICIOUSLY’ IN LIVERPOOL CAB

A cab passenger “behaving suspiciously” triggered a car stop in which police found 11 wraps of cocaine and a large block of cannabis. The Liverpool Echo reports that officers who were patrolling in Huyton on November 9 at around 9.50pm stopped a cab and searched the passenger and found 11 wraps of powder suspected to be cocaine and a large block of cannabis.

A 19-year-old from Whiston was arrested on suspicion of possession with intention to supply a Class A drug. Following the arrest, officers raided a home in Knowsley where they found large amounts of cocaine hidden, digital scales, a large bag containing 25 golf ball sized packages and ten wraps of suspected cocaine which were seized from the property. Each amount was taken by police for testing.
