UBER UPDATE

UBER ARRIVES IN NORTHAMPTON TO MEET GROWING DEMAND

Ride-hailing giant Uber has officially launched its services in Northampton, responding to a surge in local demand. Starting from Thursday, 11 July, residents can book Uber rides through the app, with over 1,500 people in Northampton already seeking trips each week. “We are incredibly proud to launch Uber in Northampton,” said

Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK. “The rising demand for our services here is clear, and we believe Uber will not only maxi- mise earning opportunities for drivers but also boost trans- portation options for passengers and support the local economy.” This launch aligns with the goals of the Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District

(BID). “Ensuring easy, safe, and comfortable access to our town centre is crucial, especially for the nighttime economy,” said Mark Mullen, operations manager at the BID. “We’ve seen a significant demand for Uber in Northampton, and we’re delighted to welcome them. We

look forward to

collaborating and delivering a top- notch service.”

UBER’S APPLICATION FOR LICENCE TO OPERATE IN DARLINGTON TO BE DECIDED THIS MONTH

Darlington could soon see Uber cars on its streets after the ride- hailing giant applied for a licence to operate in the town. The company’s application is currently under review by Darlington Borough Council and a decision is expected this month. While Uber vehicles from neigh- bouring Stockton-on-Tees and Durham are already a common sight in Darlington, a local licence would solidify the firm’s presence. Uber has confirmed the application but declined to comment further until the process concludes. Its expansion into Stockton earlier this year followed strong local demand. Darlington Borough Council has acknowledged the challenges faced by the local trade, with a 30% decline in drivers since

the

pandemic. While the council believes there are currently enough licensed vehicles, it has also recognised a shortage of drivers during peak

38

times. Meanwhile, local taxi drivers are expressing growing concern over the potential impact of Uber’s expansion into the town. Hackney carriage drivers fear a surge in Uber vehicles could overwhelm the local market, potentially forcing many out of business. They are urging the council to impose the same stringent regulations on private hire drivers as they face. While Uber’s application may come as no surprise, given the increasing number of its drivers already operating in the town, local taxi drivers are bracing for a

significant shift in the industry. They highlight the challenges they face, including declining earnings and the necessity to diversify their services, such as offering school runs. Local drivers emphasise their in- depth knowledge of the area and the consistency of their pricing compared to Uber’s fluctuating rates. They also argue that they are held to a higher standard of regulation than private hire drivers. Darlington BC has confirmed that Uber’s application will be con- sidered by a licensing committee on August 13, adhering to relevant legislation and council policies. Uber has defended its operations, claiming to

meet industry

standards and comply with regulations like other private hire operators. The potential arrival of Uber in Darlington is set to ignite a fierce competition for customers, with local taxi drivers fighting to protect their livelihoods.
