CARDIFF HACKNEY CARRIAGE DRIVERS OFFERED CASH TO GO GREEN
Hackney carriage drivers in Cardiff can now apply for grants to upgrade their vehicles to cleaner, more
environmentally friendly
models. The Cardiff Hackney Emis- sions Reduction Grant Scheme (CHERG) aims to reduce emissions and promote sustainable transport. Who’s eligible? • HC owners licensed with Cardiff Council since 1 February 2024.
• Cardiff residents with their taxi registered to their home address.
• Drivers whose primary income comes from taxi operation.
• Drivers who have actively used their taxi in the last three months.
How to apply? Applications are accepted on a first- come, first-served basis until funds
run out. Incomplete applications will not be considered. • Request an application form by emailing
CHERG@cardiff.gov.uk.
How much can I get? Grants range from £5,000 - £10,000 depending on upgrade type: • Standard vehicles: Up to £6,000 for switching to Euro 6, and £10,000 for transitioning to a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).
•WAVs: Up to £7,000 for switching to Euro 6, and £10,000 for tran- sitioning to a BEV.
BEV Bonus: For BEV purchases, drivers will receive the grant in two installments: first half paid on vehicle purchase, second half after 12 months, provided the taxi

FREENOW is aware of the high costs associated with purchasing or renting EV taxis meaning that not all drivers are able to make this transition. So the taxi app is joining efforts with BP to support all drivers on the platform by providing additional benefits that give drivers up to 25% off pay-as- you-go (PAYG) rates across the entire BP Pulse electric charging network, including fast, rapid and ultra-fast chargers, as well as discounted fuel at all UK BP branded sites. Nour Rasamny, Head of Operations at FREENOW UK, said: “Passengers and drivers are our number one priority at FREENOW. While we offer a wide range of EV taxi

options to our passengers, we also want to continue to support drivers with EV charging. “This collaboration with BP Pulse allows us to offer drivers on the FREENOW app a great package that ensures they have access to EV charging while also supporting drivers who weren’t yet able to make the transition to an EV with fuel discounts and other perks. “By reducing reliance on private cars in city centres and promoting the use of shared vehicles, we can change the way we move around our cities.” FREENOW is committed to mak- ing cities more accessible and less congested by offering diverse, and accessible transport options for all.

• Proof of address • V5 logbook of vehicle to be up- graded
• Taxi insurance documents and active licence
• Proof of bank balance (demon- strating funds for the purchase) Important notes: • Only one application per address. • Do not purchase or commit to buying a new vehicle before receiving a grant offer.
The decision process: • Applications assessed on inform- ation provided and evidence.
• Unsuccessful applicants will be notified via email with a reason for rejection (no appeals allowed).
• Successful applicants will receive a grant offer letter and can then purchase the vehicle .
After receiving the grant: •The new vehicle must be purchased from a licensed VAT trader within 60 days of the offer.
• Proof of purchase is required to receive the grant payment.
• Grant will be paid on registering the new vehicle with Cardiff Coun- cil and deregistering old one.
• The new taxi must remain licensed for next 24 months. Delicensing within this period will require full repayment of the grant.
• Replacing a written-off vehicle requires a new one of the same Euro Class, or the grant may need to be repaid.
• Receiving grant while ineligible will result in full repayment.
