PHTM AUGUST 2024 THE SUBJECT IS RAISED IN PARLIAMENT
Not one mention of taxi and private hire at all, very disappointing, but wait, there was news to follow in Parliament here:
https://shorturl.at/ufV3u - where Chris Vance MP called for a debate on the matter which was supported by Lucy Powell MP as Leader of the House, so it may actually be on the cards after all.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
We have various views and opinions on the subject of cross-border working, indeed have been published right here; some in support of the practice, since of course it supposedly allows them to sit around in any region waiting for jobs to come to them, whilst others strongly oppose the practice for reasons including the dilution of their income and undermining local licensing. In fact, we even hear from local authorities that they do not have the authority to enforce against illegal activities such as unlawful plying for hire, illegal ranking and failing to wear or display driver’s badges.
There are also diverse views on how to resolve the matter, ranging from: introducing a central licensing hub, to enforcing the LGMPA 1976, to introducing a mandatory intended use policy on ALL licences, which would then have to be implemented and enforced against vehicle, driver and operator licences - but this would have to be a government mandate, otherwise only some local authorities would adopt it.
SO, WHAT NOW?
Now is the time to lobby your new MPs and let them know your thoughts and suggestions. Make no mistake, not one of these MPs understands the taxi and PH industry, and the last thing we want is for a debate to take place which is badly misinformed. So reach out to, explain and help them understand your concerns - only then can we hopefully see change come within this term of parliament.
In the meantime, do not forget to contribute to the VAT consultation:
