Undercover police officers have been riding on buses around Leeds to keep a close eye out for vandals. West

and December there

were 56 incidents of criminal damage involving First Bus services – an aver- age of seven per week. In response to this spate of attacks,

Yorkshire

undercover coppers started riding buses throughthe hotspot areas as part of ‘Tro- jan Bus’ operations. They worked closely with officers in local n e i g h b o u r h o o d policing teams to crack down on the issue and managed to apprehend eight youngsters. First staff and Safer Schools

officers

have also been visit- ing schools across Leeds and educat- ing Year 7 and 8 pupils, who aremost likely to be involved, about the dangers and consequences of throwing stones at buses. Police say their

not only present obvious dangers to the drivers, passen- gers and other road users but also affect communities while buses are out of action and services that people rely on are reduced or sus- pended. “The recent opera- tions

that have The Trojan Bus Team

efforts have paid off, as there has been a ‘significant drop’ in the number of stone throwing incidents this year. From January until the end of April there have been 49

incidents – an aver- age of three per week. Chief inspector Nick Ireland said: "These kinds of attacks, which have also affected taxis and private hire vehicles,

taken place using the Trojan Bus tactic have led to a signifi- cant drop in the number of incidents and we hope the bus-using public will be reassured by that. “While this is posi- tive, we can’t afford to be complacent and we will continue

to work alongside our partner agen- cies to identify and target those hotspot areas to deter any further offences." Mmmm…We com- mend Leeds City Council and the West

Yorkshire

Police for their pro- gressive approach to passenger and driver safety. Last month we reported on their policing operation involving taxis and PHVs; now they have also set up this monitoring programme with the buses as well. This is an

outstanding for other

councils to emulate. – Ed.
