CCTV: YOUR SECURITY

Once more we have to bring you dire news of driver attacks: knife injuries, threatswith a knife, and for God’s sake! a 63-year- old driver potentially blinded with acid in order to steal his taxi. We are stepping up our already intense efforts to combat these driver attacks: we’ve submitted a design of an in-car “zero tol- erance” sticker to all licensing authorities for their approval, and we’re compiling information as to where we might source any funding to assist with the purchase of CCTV by licensed vehicle owners. We shall also be contacting police forces to try to coor- dinate more inter-agency support as in Leeds. These driver at- tacks have got to stop!

BOURNEMOUTH DRIVER IS THREATENEDWITH KNIFE

A man has been arrested on suspi- cion of attempted murder after a taxi driver was threat- ened with a knife. Police were called to Wimborne shortly before 11.55pm on Saturday 8 July after the incident. The

driver had stopped at a BP petrol sta- tion to ask for directions. He was then approached by a man who threat- ened him with a knife through an open window. The taxi driver was able to drive away.

He was not injured. Police arrested a 38- year-old Wimborne man on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He is continuing to help officers with their investigation.

ENFIELD PHV DRIVER FIGHTS TO KEEP HIS SIGHT AFTER ACID ATTACK

A minicab driver is fighting to keep his sight after being sprayed in the face with acid in a “vicious” early morn- ing carjacking. The

63-year-old

driver was attacked next to his silver Toy- ota Avensis on a road in Enfield early on Saturday 7 July. Two men thought

are to have

flagged down his car and when he got out to confront them, they

approach-

ed and sprayed the noxious substance in his face. The men then grabbed his car keys and drove off. Neighbour Michael Nash, 73, said he

was woken by flash- ing blue lights as police arrived to treat the victim. He told the Evening Standard:

“The

police were pouring gallons of water over him from a big container. Then two fire engines turned up and more police vans and an ambu- lance. “I could see police running around the park looking for themafterwards but they were gone.” The victimwas taken to an east London hospital where he remained with eye injuries that police say are believed to be life-changing.

Detectives have

appealed forwitness- es to the attack at 2am on 7 July and released details of the Toyota Avensis, regis- tration BG58 LZK. DC James Rush, from Enfield Major Crime Unit, said: “This was a vicious robbery all the more appalling because of the brazen use of a strong chemical to rob the victim.

I

would ask for anyone who was in Albany Park area at the time of this incident to contact police.” Anyone with infor- mation should call police on 101 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

MILTON KEYNES COUNCIL URGE TAXI DRIVERS TO INSTALL CCTV AFTER RECENT STABBINGS

Milton Keynes Coun- cil has denied claims that they do not allow CCTV in taxis and have reinforced that they actively encourage it. According to MK FM,

following a

stabbing and rob- bery in Greenleys on Friday July 13 and then another stab- bing between Wo- burn Sands and Wavendon on Mon- day July 23, Milton Keynes Council have come out to refute some

suggesting

comments the

council don’t allow CCTV in taxis. Cllr Catriona Morris, Chair of the Coun-

14

cil’s regulatory com- mittee said: “I am very

latest incidents did not

involve MK concerned

about the recent alleged assaults on two taxi drivers while working in Mil- ton Keynes. When people are serving the public they should feel safe at all times. “I understand the

licensed drivers and other licensing auth- orities may have dif- ferent views, but in MK, in vehicle CCTV, is absolutely en- couraged and sup- ported.” Following

com-

ments on the MKFM Facebook page sug-

gesting MK Council didn’t allow CCTV due to the privacy of customers, Morris reinforced thatthis wasn’t true, “Myself and other officers have regularly raised the idea to drivers and operators of installing CCTV in vehicles

and I

remain concerned that so few have gone downthis route. “The council strong- ly supports drivers in having CCTV installed within their vehicle and would encourage drivers to consider this. (CCTV is not dash cams, and we do not sup-

port a dash cam being used as CCTV) “Our taxi policy is clear

regarding

CCTV and encour- ages

it, having

sought views from the trade we have not made it compul- sory, but we con- tinue to strongly encourage drivers

and operators to reconsider

install CCTV. “Any driver

and that

wants to discuss the relevant CCTV re- quirements to make sure they comply with legislative re- quirements is wel- come to contact the Taxi Licensing Ser- vice.”
