UNJUST DESERTS
FINE FOR MAN WHO PUNCHED CABBIE IN FACE IN SALISBURY BEFORE SPITTING IN POLICE VAN
A man punched a taxi driver in the face before spitting in the back of a police van. PC Hammond was patrolling the city centre on Friday February 3 when he was notified by door staff that Robert Marriner was drunk and was also acting aggressively. After getting into a taxi, the 34- year-old was refused service and
became abusive towards the driver. He then assaulted the driver before being arrested by police. However, while in the back of the Wiltshire Police van, he spat out. At a hearing in March, Marriner, from Warminster, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and criminal damage. He was fined £1,234 and required
to pay a victim surcharge of £492, court costs of £85 and £100 compensation each to the taxi driver and Wiltshire Police. PC Hammond said: “Taxi drivers work hard to make sure that people get home safely when they have been out drinking and shouldn’t be subject to any assault, physical or verbal.”
20 MONTHS’ JAIL FOR THUG WHO STABBED CAMBRIDGE CABBIE IN UNPROVOKED ATTACK
A man who stabbed a cabbie in Cambridge has been jailed for one year and eight months. Uyi Orobor, 22, and an accomplice asked the driver for a ride in Cambridge, at 8.15pm last January. They got in despite there being a passenger inside. The driver protested and got out but Orobor began kicking and punching the driver who fell to the ground. As the victim got up to run away,
Orobor pulled him back
and
stabbed him with a knife in the shoulder.
The cabbie man- aged to flee and call police. He attended hospital where his injury was not life threatening. Orobor was arrested in February 2022 following an unrelated
incident. On 16 March, at Peterborough Crown Court, Orobor, from Oldham, was jailed for 20 months, having pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm. DC Alex Galan-Tarachiu said: “This was a shocking attack on a taxi driver just going about his daily business. Orobor showed no respect for him and used a grossly disproportionate level of violence.”
BELFAST MAN GIVEN PRISON WARNING AFTER GETTING 18 MONTHS PROBATION FOR CABBIE ATTACK
A passenger who attacked a taxi driver in Belfast has been given 18 months’ probation. Thomas Glassey, 39, was also ordered to carry out 80 hours community service and pay for damage he caused to the victim’s car. A judge warned him that he faces imprisonment for any failure to comply with the sentence. Glassey admitted common assault, criminal damage, and assault on a
58
police designated person. Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard he became increasingly aggressive during a cab ride last September. A Crown lawyer said Glassey called the taxi driver a “c***” and began to flail his arms around. When the car stopped he got out and kicked the vehicle, causing £200 worth of damage. As the driver tried to restrain him he kicked, punched and spat at him, resulting in a knee
injury,” the prosecutor added. Glassey continued with the outburst following his arrest, spitting on a custody officer. Based on his guilty plea and lack of any recent offending, District Judge Steven Keown imposed probation and community service, saying: “If you come back to court for breaching the order, you will go to prison. There will also be £200 compensation.”
