Apollo Hotel Amsterdam
WHAT ’S IT LIKE? The Apollo hotel, located in the Old South district of Amsterdam, a 20-minute drive from Centraal station, dates back to the 1960s. It was revamped last October when it joined Starwood’s three-year-old Tribute Portfolio (now part of Marriott) of independent “boutique” properties. The building was originally constructed for the 1928 Olympic Games. Inside, the distinctive interior design, conceived by
Belgian designer Will Erens, mixes 1920s and 1970s styles. You’ll spot gold palm-tree lamps, black-lacquer tables, velvet furniture, stained glass, vintage cabinets, dark green tiling and matt gold walls. The public spaces look hip, while the bedrooms are more subdued.
ROOMS There are 207 rooms across three categories (Deluxe, Executive and Design) plus 16 suites. Some of the bedrooms still need a facelift, but all will have new Phi-ton beds by the end of the year. Wifi is free, although I found it to be slow. Ask for a room with a canal view.
FOOD AND DRINK The three dining options are probably the best thing about the Apollo. The Living Room is open from 6.30am to 11pm and serves coffee, pastries, afternoon tea and cocktails; the Harbour Club has a retractable roof and specialises in Asian fare; and Bodon La Grande Brasserie has a raw bar and serves fine-dining French cuisine.
MEE TING S There are two meeting rooms on the ground floor, plus two on the first that can be combined to seat 200 delegates theatre-style.
VERDIC T A little out of town, but a good choice for business travellers who like a sense of individuality from a hotel. Jenny Southan
