the value this brings to the individual’s development and the benefits to the organisation. They have provided me not only with encouragement but the time to do this. Throughout my career, I have always tried to replicate this for others and as a director of a library, I am super com- mitted to this. I hope this commitment is replicated across all organisations. Special interest groups require volun- teers, but this doesn’t necessarily mean volunteering in your personal time. It is about finding the right group where you are interested in the topic, it fits with the skills you want to develop, and your organisation will support you in giving you the time to do this.


We regularly say in Higher Education that students are time poor. This is a true statement for a lot of working people as well, including myself. It is a balancing act that I know I don’t always get right. What I do know though is the benefit I get from being on the MCG committee is such a positive in my working life. Our profession can only grow and develop by us all working together and sharing ideas and experiences. It is what we are good at and what we need to find a way to continue to prioritise. MCG is one of many CILIP special interest groups and there will be other equivalent groups in each sector/geographical area. Do have a look to see what is available and see whether 2025 is a year for you to join.


The MCG – we need help The PPRG originally formed on the 1 January 1984 with the first awards and conference running in 1985 – 40 years ago this year. The group rebranded in 2020, becoming the Marketing and Com- munications Group, or MCG, to reflect the shift in library communications activities. amongst our members and our interests cover the marketing and promotion of library and information services, as well as wider user engagement and audience development activities.


One of the main aims of the PPRG was to “give its members the benefit of each other’s experiences” and this aim is still true 40 years later. Communications activities are crucial yet often underval- ued and underfunded – that’s why we offer bursaries for our members to attend events and increase their knowledge, we run the Marketing Excellence Awards to highlight good practice in the sector and run events including a national confer- ence.


All of this work is done by committee volunteers – and we need help! The committee is currently very small, with only four members. For us to continue we need to grow the committee to have the capacity to relaunch the awards, bursary and events programme. We’d also love to digitise our archive (currently living in someone’s attic), enable more network-


ing opportunities for our members, and spend more time developing capacity for marketing and communications in the sector.
