Together as one: the benefits of membership for you and your profession

Over the last 12 months, CILIP has seen some significant changes – both internally and in the wider world. With a new mission-driven government, a new chief executive and new member benefits it is an exciting time to be part of the CILIP family. Rob Green looks at some of the changes and what they mean for you and your membership.

PERHAPS the two biggest headline changes for CILIP members will be the arrival of new Chief Executive, Louis Coiffait-Gunn and a new government that is looking to steer the UK into pros- perity after years of austerity. The timings of these two changes are both coincidental – a general election was called just two weeks after Louis joined CILIP – and fortuitous. A new government has given CILIP new opportunities to engage with key decision makers who are looking to change the way government delivers its aims. Through a mix of planning, preparation and being quick to adapt, CILIP is able to make the most of these opportunities and advocating for out members and the profession across sectors. Already Louis has written to key ministers to outline how the information professions are already working to deliver on some of the government’s key goals and point out how effective you can be with proper funding and support.

An in-person event at the Houses of Parliament in October saw CILIP working with partners to promote libraries and the people who work in them to a string of MPs and peers. The event was a chance to showcase some of the amazing stories submitted to CILIP’s Libraries Change Lives interactive map, and to highlight the many services above and beyond book loans that libraries offer. There are still too many people who have an outdated view of what a public library does, and even more who do not realise that libraries and information services are absolutely integral to the success of so many individuals and organisations. Our event at Westminster was a great opportunity for us to raise awareness and make sure that libraries are information, knowledge and library services are part of the political conversation moving forward.” That advocacy is a vital part in delivering positive change for the profession, ensuring your work is valued, understood and appreciated.
