CILIPS reveals Scotland’s Librarian of the Year for 2024

SCOTLAND’S Library and Informa tion Professional of the Year for 2024 is Alison Nolan for her work to integrate health and wellbeing into strategic planning at Invercylde Libraries. Alison looked to build on some of the positives to emerge from

the Covid pandemic – including improved community spirit and a drive to improve health services within the library framework. Her aim was to create a sustainable and joined-up approach to health and well being delivery through the library service. As well as sharing best practice from across the service, Alison also looked to create training for all public library workers in the region, helping them understand health needs and develop their health literacy skills. Alison was also able to bring in partners, including Alzheimer’s Scotland and Barnardo’s, to ensure strong partnerships are developed. The initiative is helping the local community to build resilience, maintain independence, and reduce reliance on traditional health and care services. Judges commended Alison’s “exemplary approach to engagement, focusing on key community concerns and priorities in ways that set a fantastic example for fellow library professionals: reinforcing innovative understandings of all that our sector can do and sending out a powerful, positive advocacy message”. The award, which is sponsored by Bolinda is made by CILIPS and was awarded at this year’s CILIPS Con- ference in Dundee. Also picking up awards at this year’s conference were Jimi Mitchell, Senior Library Administrator at the Sir Alex Ferguson Library and Tony Lyon, Librarian at the Mitchell Library. Jimi won the Ian McCracken Award for Outstanding Practice

and Achievements, for his work in creating The Recording Studio in The Sir Alex Ferguson Library at Glasgow Caledonian Univer- sity. The studio provides free access to industry standard equip-

ment for anyone looking to create audio projects, from podcasts to music. The studio also provides training for anyone looking to use the equipment. Tony won the Ian McCracken Award for Innovation in Role or Service, for a project that has enabled people from less advantaged backgrounds to borrow musical instruments from the Mitchell Library. The scheme has removed barriers for many people looking to learn a musical instrument.
