ithout wanting to second-guess next month’s general election result, we can safely say that change is on the horizon. We know that pre-election polls can’t always be relied on, but even if we disregard completely these political predictions we know that on 5 July
there will be at least 132 new MPs.
In the last few months we have seen politicians from all parties confirm that they will not be standing in this election, paving the way for new names and faces in the Westminster corridors. These changes present us with new opportunities – not just at a national level, but at a local level. Each MP is elected to represent their con- stituents, and that means we each have an opportunity to influence and persuade. CILIP is working on your behalf to make sure these stories are heard, and you can add your own voice – either directly with your local MP or through CILIP’s advocacy work. For many in this new cohort of MPs, libraries and the role of information professionals will be unclear. Yes, they will all have an understanding that you can borrow a book, but will they know about all the other vital services you can find in a public library? Will they understand the value of the university library in sup- porting the millions of UK students through their education? Do they realise that information professionals are working alongside clinicians in health settings to ensure patients get the best care available? Are they aware that knowledge managers are helping industry to prosper? Do they know that information professionals across every sector are helping to deliver positive change and sup- port communities in all walks of life?
Of course, some may be aware of all the ways that information professionals are helping organisations and individuals to deliver positive change. But for all those that aren’t, CILIP is opening dialogue with prospective candidates and will be continuing to engage with the new government and demonstrating the value of the profession.
You can find out some of the ways CILIP is advocating for the profession in this issue of Information Professional, including the recently launched Trust Libraries campaign.
CILIP has also been calling for your stories of success, encourag- ing services and individuals to add them to the Libraries Change Lives map. This is helping to build a repository of the great work happening in library and information services across the country, that CILIP can use in those ongoing conversations with the new government. If you haven’t already, I’d urge you to visit the CILIP website and add your service’s success stories.
