utumn is with us and this year there is a new event to add to your calendar – Libraries Rewired. CILIP’s new digital focused conference promises something completely differ- ent to look forward to as summer drifts away. It is set to offer a new perspective on technology and how it can be used in library and information settings. With emerg- ing and potentially transformative digital change happening all around us, Libraries Rewired is an opportunity to feed your curios- ity and get creative. The programme is already taking shape, and you won’t be surprised to hear that it will feature innovative think- ers from within the sector and further afield. Already confirmed is Dave Rowe, the creative force behind Librar- ies Hacked. Dave is also a hive of inspirational ideas around how you can set data free and make it work for you and your service. Libraries Rewired is taking place in November, and you can find out more about it in this issue.
A
Elsewhere we hear from Dave Nicholls and Tom Hudson about their own digital learning journey, and how they learned to love coding. Along with colleagues from NICE, they instigated a self- taught coding club, learning as they went and supporting each other through the process.
The other big date for your diaries is the annual Libraries Week celebration, which takes place in the first week of October. This year it is looking at sustainability in the sector and how libraries, information and knowledge management services are supporting communities. We’d love to see what you’ll be doing to celebrate Green Libraries Week.
CILIP is also launching new guidance for library staff – aimed at public library services, but with plenty of useful information for other sectors. Managing Safe and Inclusive Public Library Ser- vices: A practical guide draws on CILIP’s ethical framework and is designed to give library staff the skills and confidence to protect intellectual freedoms.
We also hear from Arts Council England’s Director, Libraries,
Luke Burton, who reveals some of what he has learnt in his first few months in the post. I’m sure all those familiar with the We Are CILIP action plan will recognise that each of the activities mentioned above fit neatly into the four key concepts outlined in that plan – Digital Transforma- tion; Sustainability; Equity and Social Justice; and Leadership. And you can find out more about CILIP’s ongoing work to deliver that action plan at this year’s AGM in October.
