original code was returning errors and needed to be updated. This sort of work is good for retaining our knowledge of the coding language, although it is diffi- cult to anticipate how regularly this will happen and how it will impact on our capacity as we look to add to our suite of code-based tools.
The future
Despite the challenges, our initial year working and learning together as a coding group was a very positive experience. We have been rolling out our first coded tools as well as presenting to our team, the wider organisation, and our colleagues in the health information community. The upskilling initiative has built coding capability within the Informa- tion Services team enabling us to make current processes more efficient and has allowed us to add another string to our bow. The remaining challenge for our management team is to create a sustain- able model that supports the ongoing development of coding and data literacy
skills and empowers the whole team to embrace the challenges of future develop- ments in technology.
We, as the embryonic coding group, have felt a great benefit from the developmental space we have been afforded within our roles in the last year to work together and experiment in a largely self-guided way. Coding is no longer a completely foreign country, and we are all
certainly keen to spend more time there. IP
