To us, as information professionals, the enormous breadth of our various service offers can seem so obvious we don’t even notice just how many of them we provide: because everything we do on a day to day basis becomes routine so quickly, it can be easy to forget the difference our roles make, on an individual level, to the people who don’t see all the other similar requests we undertake and only know the positive impact we’ve had on them personally. But even those individual interactions can have a huge impact, everywhere from public and school libraries to academic, research, or corporate information services. The specific role of the service inevitably varies based on its operational context, but our core mission is so often the same – our services work to open up access to information, to mobilise knowledge, and to inspire

INSIGHT

President’s View

Libraries Week and the Green Manifesto

S the memory of August starts to give way to the advance of autumn, we find ourselves – possibly with a slightly

stunned sense of ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’! – looking towards October, where Libraries Week is once again approaching. Every year, this national celebration brings us another opportunity to highlight the incredible range of services which libraries provide to their communities – of course we all work to promote our services all the time, but the unity of Libraries Week is always a fantastic chance to maximise the impact of that message as we unite across the profession, helping promote a core message.

people and support their learning throughout their lives.

That access to information, which library and knowledge services offer, is a vital cornerstone of lifelong learning, but so often it’s also essential to improving social equality and mobility, enabling people to understand themselves, their potential, and the part they can play not just in reaching their own potential, but in maximising their impact on the wider world.

Message

This year, that message is more important than ever as we focus Libraries Week 2023 around a theme of Green Libraries, and the work our profession is doing to ensure greener libraries and library services, as well as the role libraries can play in building more sustainable societies and helping to combat the climate crisis.

The role of libraries, a vital third space in our communities, and so often already a go-to source for information and access to knowledge, is key to helping showcase the efforts we are making as a sector to promote and build a better understanding of sustainable living, and this Libraries Week is a fantastic opportunity to build on this. Dozens of services and sector bodies have already signed up to our Green Libraries Manifesto, so this Libraries Week is a brilliant opportunity to promote that commitment made on behalf of our users, or to join the services who have already signed the pledge.

Resources

As always, there’s lots of fantastic resources available to help your service get started for Libraries Week at www.

John Trevor-Allen is President of CILIP. www.cilipconference.org.uk

librariesweek.org.uk, but I’m confident staff across the sector will already have fantastic ideas of how best to promote Libraries Week with a focus on the context of their own communities and users’ needs. The breadth of our profession is so great, and the myriad ways in which we impact and improve lives are so many, that the precise ways in which each service celebrates Libraries Week is bound to vary from one organisation to another, and almost certainly within organisations spread over multiple sites, too. But whatever the differences in individual specifics, I know we’ll be united behind our core message: that libraries, wherever they are in the world, are bastions of truth, sources of information and inspiration for every member of their community.

Libraries change lives, and Green Libraries can help to change the world: it’s never been more important to share that message with the world, and this Libraries Week is a fantastic opportunity to unite our voices and do so. IP
