Libraries Week goes green
LIBRARIES Week 2023 will be Green Libraries Week, as announced at the Green Libraries conference earlier this year. The week (2-8 October) will celebrate and showcase the work being done in libraries across the UK focused on sustainability and climate change. Each year CILIP picks a theme to explore the innovative and surprising things that libraries are doing to support their communities. This year coincides with a sector-wide focus
on the Green agenda and you can find the latest details from the Green Libraries Partner- ship at
www.cilip.org.uk/page/GreenLibraries with a wide array of resources and case studies from across the UK and the rest of the world. CILIP is aiming to encourage and sup-
port libraries in every sector to reach out to their communities and local media. This can
include local MPs and other decision mak- ers to promote the transformative role of libraries in addressing sustainability and climate change. Updated templates, tips and guides to
help plan, market and promote events will be made available
http://librariesweek.org.uk/ libraries-hub/.
Library staff can use CILIP’s interactive Green Libraries Week Map to share infor- mation about their events and activities. They can also register now (

Support for dissenting authors
NOT all authors want rightsholder- focused policies or to align themselves with publishers and a project has been set up specifically to support Euro pean authors. Set up by Authors Alliance – itself formed in reaction to positions held by the Authors Guild – and Knowledge Rights 21, “Giving Voice to Authors” aims to build support for European authors who write for the public benefit. The Authors Alliance said: “Without a countervailing voice on behalf of authors, policy makers can all too easily conclude that most or even all authors favour these
maximalist copyright positions. Authors Alliance aims to help give voice to Euro- pean authors who have a countervailing view. “Joining as a member of Authors Alliance
is a simple but important way to help us speak out on behalf of those authors who share our mission of promoting policies that would make creative works accessible and discoverable. Membership numbers help us better magnify your voices and lend weight to our input in policy debates.” KR21 said that in the EU “the debate has been dominated by the largest players,
with messaging that gives the impression that authors care little for the rights of users, educational establishments, librar- ies, or the public. “While some may indeed believe this,
these positions do a disservice to those authors who prioritise seeing their crea- tions and the knowledge they advance to reach as many readers as possible.” It adds: “This voice will be stronger if Euro-
pean authors who share this position can have an association through which they them- selves are able to make their voices heard.” For more information visit:
