s many of you will have seen, this year is CILIP’s 125th anniversary. The anniversary marks 125 years since Queen Victoria awarded the Library Association, as we were back then, its Royal Charter. For the next century and a quarter, it is that charter which has underpinned the LA and now CILIP’s work, helping to set ethical and professional standards that have helped create a trusted profession that adds value to everything it touches.

A

Information Professionals in all the guises deliver services that others build on. They create gateways to information an knowl- edge; they inspire creativity; and they provide reassurance about truth, facts and what can be trusted.

Former US President Barack Obama delivered an impassioned celebration of all those traits in an open letter to US librarians. But the sentiments expressed in that letter can be transferred to every information professional and the work they do for their communi- ties.

Aside from the social value library and information professionals, we are also seeing the economic value that they can bring, whether on an individual, organisation, national or global scale. We cover this and President Obama’s letter in the news pages of this issue. But as we consider what 125 years of a Royal Charter means and the value it brings, it is fitting that this issue also celebrates 125 of the profession’s brightest and best new talent. CILIP wanted to use its 125th year to look ahead, and the CILIP 125 List does just that – highlighting the contributions of leaders, aspiring leaders and the everyday leaders who are making a difference to lives through their work. In this issue, we hear from two of those 125, but over the coming months we will be looking at other stories from the CILIP 125 List.

Elsewhere in this issue, two of this year’s Conference New Voices, New Ideas speakers share their experiences of being a first-time speaker at conference. It may have been daunting, but each of them has been rewarded with a sense of achievement having overcome fears and being able to share their ideas with colleagues. And in the spirit of looking to the future, preparations for this year’s Libraries Week are underway and summer could be the perfect time to start planning your event. There is also a new conference on the horizon, with the announcement of CILIP’s Libraries Rewired event, for anyone interested in developing the future tech skills.
