are adapted as a result of changing needs and feedback from participants. HEE also worked closely with course trainers and facilitators during the accred- itation. CV’s or equivalent documentation were collected to evidence experience and skills and interviews were arranged with CILIP’s independent assessor to gather additional evidence.

This rigorous process assured Health Education England of the value of the resulting accreditation. The assessors report provided a number of useful recommenda- tions for improving practices still further. These will inform the Workforce CPD Group’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of the learning offers made available to healthcare knowledge and library staff.

The future

Looking to the future, the vision is for the Knowledge for Healthcare Learning Acad- emy to be respected as the first port of call for employers and line managers aiming to strengthen the knowledge and library service team and individuals seeking to develop and widen their knowledge and skills.

Developing the Learning Academy

By choosing a CILIP accredited course, learners can feel confident that the con- tent is high quality and has been tested against the professional standard by an independent assessor. The CILIP accreditation certifies quality learning and delivery as well as relevance to the employment market.

Learning providers can apply to have their short courses accredited by CILIP, with all submissions to the scheme assessed by an independent assessor – including covering relevance to CILIP’s PKSB, quality of the course, and engagement with employers. Full details of how to become part of the scheme can be found at www.cilip.org.uk/ CILIPShortCourseAccreditation.

32 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

Beyond the knowledge and library workforce we have ambitions to provide courses for any NHS and healthcare staff interested in managing knowledge better, gaining information handling skills, and learning how to share and mobilise knowledge.

There are efforts already underway to develop e-learning courses around Critical Appraisal and Knowledge Mobilisation which will be accessible via E-Learning for Healthcare, the e-learning platform for all health and care professionals. Sue Lacey Bryant, National Lead for NHS Knowledge and Library Services,

said: “We are fortunate to be able to make this investment. I’d like to see that people in the healthcare workforce recognize the Knowledge for Healthcare Learning Academy as a place where you can develop specialist skills and under- take formal learning around knowledge mobilisation that you wouldn’t get a chance to do elsewhere.” IP
