T

his month, I have been thinking a lot about professional solidarity.

In Ukraine right now, as towns and cities are pummelled by Russian bombs, librarians and information profession- als are mounting an unbelievably heroic defence of the values at the heart of our profession. Librarians in Kyiv, Karkhiv and Mauripol are keeping their public libraries open in the direst of circumstances, offering makeshift shelter for their communities and providing much-needed access to information, connectivity and support.

They are working with the UN Blue Shield to protect special col- lections and archives. They have even formed a task force to moni- tor and combat Russian disinformation.

I have spent much of the past fortnight in contact with our col- leagues in the Ukrainian Library Association. In so many ways, they are driven by the same principles that inspire and motivate us here in the UK – a belief in the right to an education, to freedom of expression, to democratic accountability and to self-determination as a sovereign nation.

I am proud to share a profession with Ukraine’s librarians. We must be resolute in calling on our own Government to do every- thing in its power to support the millions of people displaced by this appalling invasion. At the same time, in the USA, librarians find themselves coming under a different kind of assault – as they face increasing pressure from far Right groups and lobbyists to withdraw books that speak of difference, of equality and of diversity.

The assault on intellectual freedom and freedom of expression in America is of a different order to the atrocities committed in Ukraine and yet here again we are seeing the best of our profession as librarians rally to prevent the erasure of LGBTQ+ people, people of colour and other marginalised voices from their shelves. Here in the UK, our new five-year plan, We Are CILIP, is intended as a rallying-cry for our profession. We may not yet be at war, and the censorship of collections is still limited here, but we, too, must be prepared to defend these values in the face of cuts and Culture Wars.

That’s why I am delighted that this issue will focus on how you can get involved in our community. Because it is only by standing together as a profession in a spirit of professional solidarity that we can ensure that when our time comes, we can respond. From Ukraine to the USA to our community here in the UK – we are all CILIP, and we stand united.
