positive difference for users, communi- ties, organisations and businesses.
“Supporting members, supporting each other.”
That notion of supporting each other is seen as big part of making We Are CILIP as successful as it can be. CILIP members – those people working in the sectors – are in the best position to help drive positive change. And the more people who can get involved, the better for the whole community.
Get involved, your way
Getting involved with the action plan does not need to be huge commitment and everyone will have different reasons for supporting We Are CILIP. That’s why there is no single way for you to join in – everyone will be able to choose what is right for them and their circum- stances. But just being a CILIP member is a great first step, by embedding the values, ethics and aims in your work. That is one reason why we are asking members to think about ways they can help bring in new members. This issue of Information Professional includes a recruitment poster, highlighting some of the benefits of becoming a CILIP member. If you have an office notice board, please think about displaying it for others to see. CILIP has also produced a handy guide to some other ways to engage with others in your professional network. IP
Paul Caton, CILIP Relationships Manager (England), takes a closer look at some of the many volunteer- ing opportunities and why they are such an important part of CILIP’s success. Some of CILIP’s volunteers also give their take on what they have achieved through their roles with CILIP.
Volunteering with CILIP CILIP relies on our amazing volun- teers – people working or studying in the profession who give their time to support our work. We have around 500 volunteers at any given time and we call them our CILIP Champions. CILIP Champions are involved in every aspect of our work, from Committees to events, or supporting key activities like Professional Registration. They give their time to support the profes- sion whether they’re mentors, board members or are part of our professional communities throughout the UK. If you’ve never thought about volun- teering with CILIP, it can be an amazing opportunity to develop new skills, boost your own CPD and Chartership portfolio, expand your professional and social

networks and share and expand your own knowledge. Here are just a few examples of how volunteering with us helps you give back to the profession while benefit- ting your own career.
CPD
During the pandemic it’s been hard to focus on life responsibilities, never mind your CPD, by being part of a CILIP community you can use this experience to boost your Professional Registration and revalidation portfolio, helping to make yourself more employable.
“I’m learning what I can do and this helps you feel like you belong in your pro- fession. In terms of CPD and progressing through my own work, I’ve been able to get promotions because it gives me extra experience to talk about at interview.” – Victoria Hunter
New skills
Volunteering with CILIP is a great way to develop new skills. You can learn the skills to manage; organise conferences and events and understand finances. You can learn to run social media campaigns, writing skills for newsletters and journals or developing online content. These all
translate into real opportunities for per- sonal and career growth. “It’s something I’m so glad I got involved
in. It’s opened up a whole lot of opportu- nities for me. I’ve got to organise events and present at Conference, I don’t think I’d have had the confidence to do that if I hadn’t had experience of organising with my network first.” – Mike Jones
Networks
It’s also a fantastic opportunity to build your professional networks, working in one of our communities give you access to a team of committed professionals who share an interest. This often opens up access to wider networks that may be particularly valuable, especially if you are a solo worker in your organisation. “It’s been great to meet people across the profession, because I worked in a workplace library, which was quite small, I really benefited from those inter- actions from people in different sectors of the profession.” – Jo Wood
