l Strengthening the existing offer through robust processes;
l Increased clarity over learning out- comes and course content;
l Added value through accreditation by our professional body;
l Increased confidence of employers and other stakeholders.
Achieving CILIP Accreditation for the short courses offered by the Learning Academy was a key objective to achieve these various, interrelated aims. As a CILIP Employer Partner, HEE recognises the importance of professional recognition for NHS knowledge and library specialists and values the assurance that CILIP accreditation gives as to the quality of the Learning Academy offer. Through accreditation both employers and learners can feel confident that course content is high quality and has been tested against the professional standard by an independ- ent assessor. CILIP accreditation certifies quality learning and delivery as well as relevance to the employment market.
Accreditation
Achieving CILIP Short Course Accred- itation for the learning offered under the Learning Academy banner was an immediate priority for HEE which is
responsible for quality assuring NHS knowledge and library services. It helps employers and learners themselves by offering the same quality guarantee that full CILIP Accreditation offers to degree-level courses. Employers, library teams and individuals can book quality training to enhance skills and knowledge with confidence.
As part of the accreditation process, CILIP reviewed a representative sample of the CPD opportunities currently offered by the Learning Academy to ensure they meet the following criteria:
l Relevance of the course to required professional knowledge and skills through mapping to CILIP’s Professional Knowl- edge and Skills Base (PKSB).
l The course is providing a high-quality learning experience;
l HEE engages with employers to ensure that programmes are relevant;
l Facilitators and trainers are up to date with current professional practice;
l Learners are encouraged to engage with their professional body (CILIP).
HEE’s Workforce CPD Group took a sample of 25 of the short courses [defined as courses under 20 hours in duration] offered during 2021-22. The courses were deliberately chosen to be representative of the breadth of the offer currently provided by the team. They included areas such as Library Carpentry, Costing, Health Literacy training, Knowledge Mobilisation, User Focused Services, and Understanding Patient Data.
The Learning Outcomes and content of each course was first mapped against the new PKSB. This provides assurance of the relevance of the course content to the knowledge and skills required by colleagues working in the knowledge, library, information and data profes- sions. It also provides a reference point for CILIP members who have identified specific development needs by using the PKSB self-assessment tool. Colleagues can immediately see which of the courses on offer through the Learning Academy most closely map to their development needs. Data from staff consultations and the regular Development Needs Analysis, together with feedback from delegates, was used to evidence how the courses reflect the needs of users, are well evaluated, and
