Overdrive’s UK audiobook and ebook lending figures

THE UK’s biggest player in public lib

per cent growth in total UK ebook and audiobook circulation in 2019. This compares to a 20 per cent increase globally. Rakuten Overdrive is the global market leader for digital reading platforms in public libraries, serving around 43,000 libraries and schools. In January it reported a record-breaking year

for

audio and ebook lending. The UK did not feature in its press releases because other parts of the world saw faster rates of growth. However, taken separately the growth in audiobooks in the UK was up 18 per cent compared to 2018. Similarly, if the figures for juvenile/YA are taken separately, the joint audiobook/ebook growth stands at 14 per cent. In a press release Overdrive said that

326 million ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines had been checked out of libraries and schools globally in the past 12 months – a 20 per cent increase over the previous year. It said publishers and authors benefited from the library’s role as a discovery channel with record library sales of digital titles across all genres for all audiences. The company also said a record 73 public

library systems in five countries loaned over one million digital books to readers in 2019.

Paul Davighi, OverDrive UK and

Ireland Country Manager, said: “Total ebook and audiobook circulation in Australia and Canada grew at faster rates overall (21 per cent and 17 per cent respectively), and these countries along with the UK demonstrate a continuing trend of increasing public library ebook and audiobook popularity worldwide.” He said: “What the data shows is that audio continues to be the major driver of growth in the UK digital library market and OverDrive, through its award-win- ning Libby app, helps power this growth in audiobook usage with new technology to enable digital library users to be able to listen to their audiobooks anytime and anywhere.’ He added that updates to its Libby

App have made it even easier for Over- Drive users to access digital content – including audiobooks. Paul said:

“In addition,

the new

Instant Digital Card function provides interested users without a traditional library card immediate access to their library authority’s OverDrive collection and gets them listening and reading straightaway.”
