Reshuffles at DCMS
A NEW Culture Secretary, a new libraries minister, and a new shadow culture secretary have been announced in the first two months of 2020.
Following Boris Johnson’s reshuffle Oliver Dowden is the new Culture Secretary, taking over from Nicky Morgan. He is the ninth person to have led the Department for Digi- tal, Media, Culture and Sport since 2010. Also new to the department is parliamentary under secretary of state for sport, tourism and heritage, Nigel Huddleston. He is the seventh to hold the post since 2016. In January Tracy Brabin was appointed Shadow Culture Secretary after Tom Watson’s resignation. Kevin Brennan remains shadow libraries minister.
Book review Correction
LAST month’s Book reviews pages in Information Professional incorrectly attributed the review of SLA Voices: developing the new library at Headington School to Louise Ashton.
The review was actually written by Sue Gwilliam. We would like to apologise to both Sue and Louise for the error.

Early bird offers for CILIP Cymru Wales Conference
BOOKING for this year’s CILIP Cymru Wales conference have opened, with early bird offers avail- able until the end of this month. The conference is taking place in Bangor on 14 and 15 May and is an opportunity for library and information professionals from across Wales and beyond to come together. The two-day conference will provide a platform for insight, initiatives and best practise, with plenty of opportu- nity to network. Speakers include Helgard Krause, who will be talking about work- ing internationally in her role as CEO of Books Council of Wales; Jamie Finch, Academic and International Librarian at Cardiff Metropolitan University, who will be continuing the decolonising libraries conversation started at last year’s ILIG conference; and Cardiff Libraries’ Preeti Pathak and Ceri Rowlands who will be describing skills development work with refugees and asylum seekers. Organisers want this year’s event to focus on the positives in the profession, and Alan Hughes, Head of Special Col- lections at Cardiff University and CILIP Cymru Wales committee member, said: “I’m delighted that CILIP Cymru Wales 2020 will give Wales a loud platform to shout about the incredible work going on in libraries across Wales and beyond our borders. This year we will be celebrat- ing the achievements of the profession in Wales – our exceptional services, our talented people, and our remarkable com-
munities. This will truly be a celebration of Wales in the world.”
In keeping with the idea of celebrating
the achievements of the profession, CILIP Cymru Wales has created a new team award. The award will recognise teams that are making a difference to the library and information sectors. Katrina Hall, Lead Library & Knowl- edge Services Manager for Hwyel Dda University Health Board and fellow committee member, said: “After several years of a successful Welsh Librarian of the Year Award in 2020 CILIP Cymru Wales are introducing a Team Award in response to suggestions from Member- ship and to recognise the contribution of Library/Information Service Teams across Wales.”
Nominations for the award close on
31 March, and all nominations must come from CILIP Cymru Wales/CILIP members, and self-nomination is allowed – however team members do not need to be CILIP members. Nominated teams must be able to demonstrate two of the following criteria – Positive impact on community or sector; Improving library services; or Innovative practice and/or partnerships. The winning team will be revealed at this year’s conference.

App update means temporary down time
THE Information Professional app will not be updated this month as we move to a new platform that will offer wider access to CILIP services. The move will allow the app to become more focused on CILIP’s member benefits and services, with links to jobs and events among the extras, when it relaunches. Current app users will be able to download the new version once it
is live, and it will include all past issues of Information Professional. The latest issue of Information Profes- sional will be made available online for all members on the CILIP website. The move is temporary and the new app is due be launched before the next issue of Information Professional is out. Visit
