A useful edition for those working in the preservation industry
THE author has spent over a decade trying to make sense of digital preser- vation, having worked at a number of institutions including the Library of Congress. The book is intended as a point of entry into the practice, and a point of reference for developing your own skills as a digital preservation practitioner.
The intended audience is current and new workers in library, archive and museums services plus the scholars and researchers who interact with them. The aim of the book is to guide you through the pro- cesses of making and enacting your own digital preservation strategy.
Included is a history of pres-
ervation in a range of areas; useful and intended to make the reader think conceptually about the nature of digital records and how they diff er. The remit of the book also cov- ers the basics: the diff erence between hoarding and preser- vation, planning and storage facilities, mitigating risk, the relationship between digital data and the database, and dealing with future technolog- ical change. Diff erent fi le types and structures are examined using the concept of ‘layers’ of data. Owens is impressed with the ‘wisdom’ of the cultural heritage professions, advising use of their systems and practices in storage and preservation, access and use. The key message is that digital preservation is a craft, not a science. Digital practi-

A feast of ideas for anyone interested in knowledge management
KNOWLEDGE Manage- ment (KM) is currently attracting renewed interest through the publication of ISO 30401 in November 2018 and launch of CILIP’s KM Chartership in 2019. The enthusiastic impetus driving the call to view KM as a profession with many benefi ts to off er organisa- tions is evident throughout this book.

tioners should craft the right approach for a given preser- vation concept, consistently engaging with the conceptual issues raised in the book. Included are extensive, well-chosen and easy to under- stand examples highlighting key issues and the tone of the text is conversational. There’s a lot to get your teeth into but the format doesn’t make it easy to dip into although it is fully referenced with an index. The Theory and Craft of Dig- ital Preservation will be useful for those working in relevant industries and students inter- ested in the topic.

Any reader with an initial cynicism that the Cookbook might be gimmicky will be quickly disabused of their mistake. The concept of using story telling from the per- spective of expert ‘chefs’ and a ‘restaurant critic’ are well thought through and delivered in an engaging and entertain- ing manner without dumbing down the concepts. The reader experience is like sitting over a convivial coff ee (or something stronger) after an exquisite meal and listening to enter- taining raconteurs bring their experiences to life. The Stand- ard can be a dry and succinct read but the Cookbook adds substance to the details of the Standard in easily understood analogies.
After explaining the context of the Standard and audit process the 16 case studies demonstrate each of the aspects any auditor would assess organisations seeking accreditation against. The authors and interviewees off er an energising enthusiasm. The practical advice of how audits are likely to operate provides invaluable reassurance.

Favourite chapters include the World Bank with knowledge packages for new projects, Aramco’s simple games and most of all Medicins Sans Frontieres as a masterpiece of passion to use KM to drive constant improvements. A churlish minor criticism is that some diagrams would have benefi tted from being full page, as there is a lot of detail in a small space e.g. the chef’s canvas which could even have been a fold out fl ap in the back or front cover to easily refer to beside case studies. For anyone interested in KM or investigating the ISO Stand- ard further it off ers a feast of ideas.
