Make a will and remember the CILIP Benevolent Fund
MARCH is Make a Will Month and CILIP Benevolent Fund is asking members to consider a bequest in their wills now to help others in the future.
The benevolent fund is an independent charity and relies on donations to enable it to help members, former members and their families when they are struggling fi nancially. The majority of donations are invested, allowing the Benevolent Fund Trustees to mainly rely on interest paymentstohelppeopleinfinancialdif- ficulty. “CILIP is fortunate in having an active and caring Benevolent Fund, an inde- pendent charity with its own Trustees, which for many years has been able to help CILIP (LA/IIS) colleagues and their families who have fallen on hard times or havebeenfacedwithunexpected finan- cialdifficulties,”saysfundtrusteeNicky Whitsed, adding: “Demands on the Fund are increasing, so more donations are constantly needed. Several members have already made bequests to the Fund intheirwills.Couldyouconsiderdoing this, by adding a codicil? Or, if you have not yet made a will, could you perhaps
consider making one and leaving the Fund a legacy in it? Your will, of course, providesfirstforyourfamilyandfriends, but many people also use a will to help causestheyvalue.Perhapsthewelfareof your less fortunate colleagues could be oneofthosecauses.” Shesaysinflationcanerodethevalue
ofaspecifiedsum, andsayspeoplecan protect the value of their gift by opting for “a residual legacy which is the resi- due of your estate after all bequests, tax and expenses have been paid. It may comprise all, or a percentage, of this residue. Recently the Benevolent Fund received a small percentage of such a residue which has given the Fund many times the amount we would normally receive
throughdonationsinanyyear.” Thefund’strusteesadviseanyonemak-

CILIP Assess provides a clear
route for LIAS apprentices CILIP has created a new assessment organ- isation as a first step in ensuring anew wave of library, information and archive apprenticescanbeproperlyassessed. CILIP Assess will provide an end point assessment for the new Level 3 Library Information and Archive Services (LIAS) Assistant Apprenticeship Standard. CIL- IP’sHeadofSectorDevelopmentJoCor- nish says the creation of CILIP assess is an importantfirststep,adding:“Whenanap- prentice reaches the end of their appren- ticeship, they need a registered end point assessmentorganisation(EPAO)toassess them as having achieved their qualifica- tion.ThereishugedemandfortheLIAS Level 3 apprenticeship.
