few days ago, I found myself invited to give a few opening words to mark the launch of the new CILIP LGBTQ+ Network at the Bishopsgate Institute. It was an incredibly important moment for me – a chance to acknowledge the contribution LGBTQ+ people make and have always made to our profession and to thank the Committee for their hard work in bringing the network together. Networks, communities of practice, whether formal or informal, have always played an important part in the life of our profession. I have recently been working on a history of CILIP, drawing on two volumes of archival material covering the late 1870’s to the introduction of the 1919 Public Libraries Act. Before there was a Library Association, we were an informal group of people campaigning to lift the ‘penny tax’ restrictions on local Councils – a campaign which we eventually won (with support from legislators such as William Ewart) and which led to the fl ourishing of public libraries across the UK.

Our role as a platform, empowering and supporting networks of professionals, is in our DNA as an organisation – going right back to our foundation. It has been really encouraging, in our recent Membership Research project, to see both members and non- members in all sectors celebrating our Special Interest Groups and Regional Member Networks as the most valuable and benefi cial aspect of our work (alongside professional registration). This is why over the next few months, we will be working with our Member Networks and SIG’s to develop a Community Strategy, reducing the emphasis on our central team at CILIP and increasing the visibility and capacity of our fantastic, vibrant networks. You have also given us a very clear steer in the Membership Research that you need CILIP to be a “professional association and education provider of quality”, helping to future-proof the skills and career development of librarians, information and knowledge management professionals.

In response, we will be refocusing and updating our off er and benefi ts to members – based on giving you the best possible support, whether you engage with us through professional registration, as a training provider, through the networks or via one of our current campaigns. Whatever your relationship to CILIP, we are proud to be your professional association – led by and for members! I hope you enjoy this issue of Information Professional magazine, and as ever do please send me your ideas and suggestions for the future direction of CILIP!
