Crowning glory
Over 200,000 packets of native wildflower seeds have been sent to all state-funded primary schools in England. It's part of a collaboration between the Department for Education and the Eden Project's National Wildflower Centre to mark the Coronation.
The seeds can be planted in pots,
beds or borders. Each packet contains enough to create approximately two square metres of cornflower, corn poppy, corn chamomile, corncockle, corn marigold and night-flowering catchfly. Lostwithiel and Mevagissey were
the first two Cornish schools to receive their seeds, so the National Wildflower Centre team went to help them sow. Thirty-two nursery and Year 6 children from Lostwithiel and ten from Mevagissey Community Primary

'We were thrilled to take part in this initiative and sow wildflowers to celebrate the Coronation … We can't wait to see the wildflowers bloom and provide food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators in our school grounds.' Kate Webber, Lostwithiel Primary School's Deputy Head Teacher
School's Eco Club planted the seeds and gave them their first watering. Over the next few months they will continue to care for the wildflower seeds until they germinate, producing beds of stunning blue, white, purple, red and yellow flowers that will also help increase biodiversity. Becky Bennett
‘Geothermal is the sleeping giant of renewables: lying not under our noses, but
literally under our feet.’ Sir Tim Smit KBE.
The sleeping giant is awake. On 19 June, the Eden Geothermal plant was switched on, providing heat for the Rainforest Biome, offices, and our new on-site nursery, Growing Point. It’s the UK’s first operational deep geothermal heating plant in 36 years. Gus Grand, CEO of EGL, said: 'This is a big moment for Eden Geothermal and renewables in the UK, but we’ve only just begun … geothermal energy, with its small surface impact, can be used in urban areas and for large institutions, factories, hospitals, universities and schools.’ BB
