10 Defenders of the Shallows

Dr Rhiannon White

Eden has always been about spending as much time as possible playing outside in nature. Our Little Eden, Deep Roots New Shoots activities and schools’ programmes actively reach out to children and carers of all ages, but this year we’re upping our game with a whole Summer of Play. At the heart of it is Nature’s Playground, an almost 500 m² play area featuring the incredible Tree of Life, which spills out across Eden’s woody slopes. It’s accompanied by a full programme of activities for all ages. More on what’s in store on page four. It’s full steam ahead for Eden Geothermal too. The almost 5km-deep-

geothermal well has been connected to the heat main and will help us with our Race to Zero by providing heat for our Biomes, offices, and Growing Point, our new nursery. The future of food provides fertile ground for two of our features in

this issue. Charlotte Fraser picks her way through our new exhibition Acts of Gathering, which explores harvests and food security, amongst other themes, on p.22. In June I had the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Langford, the author of Rooted. We discussed how the future of farming might lie, at least partly, in its past. Meanwhile, Rhiannon White dives into the story of one of the sea’s unsung heroes on p.10. Robert Lowe, Editor.
