It’s estimated that a quarter of the three billion pairs of flip-flops made every year end up in our oceans. Ocean Sole was set up in 1999 to upcycle the thousands that wash up on Kenya’s shores from the Indian Ocean. Inspired by the simple toys Kenyan children make from the detritus, Ocean Sole began to shape discarded flip-flops into toys, bracelets, keychains, and incredible sculptures designed to raise awareness of plastic pollution. Over 580 tons of flip-flops are upcycled by Ocean Sole every year, creating almost 100 jobs in low-income communities in Kenya.

The flip-flops are washed, glued into

blocks of Styrofoam and then sculpted into different animals. The Ocean Sole mission goes beyond upcycling. Up to 15% of their revenue goes towards beach clean-ups and conservation efforts as well as educational and vocational training courses. edenproject.com/shop
