Chums Eden’s intrepid African plants return with an award- winning garden.

Jungle

An award-winning garden designed in Cornwall, featuring plants grown at Eden, has been installed in the Rainforest Biome. The Flora & Fauna Garden won a

silver medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. The garden, sponsored by Project Giving Back, highlights the work of the collaborative conversation charity Flora & Fauna. It focuses on the spectacular Afromontane landscape of Central Africa along with its much- loved inhabitant, the mountain gorilla. The garden portrays the story of an ecotourist on a gorilla trek, tracing a rough track through a succession of lush and changing landscapes. The path eventually leads to a gorilla nest, set among bamboo and other typical gorilla food plants, and a towering waterfall. Eden’s Living Landscapes Team grew

the African vegetation that comprises most of the garden’s 3,000 plants. After a chilly week or so at Chelsea, the plants

have returned to the warmth of the Rainforest Biome, where the garden is being recreated. ‘This is a fantastic result,’ said

designer Jilayne Rickards, ‘and I am very proud to have been able to bring the vital work of Fauna & Flora to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Our aim with the garden is to help people better understand the importance of protecting nature around the world and how this can be best achieved through collaborative conservation efforts.’ Becky Bennett

Jilayne grew up in Cornwall and has been designing and creating gardens for more than 20 years. She made her show garden debut at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show with the CAMFED Garden, which won gold and the BBC/RHS People’s Choice Award and was later recreated at Eden.
