To implement the Our SPOT teen program, Parks staff successfully completed a rigorous 16-hour training in mental Health First Aide, Trauma Informed Care, and Positive Youth Development. Within these trainings topics, staff gained valuable knowledge in; Social and emotional needs of youth, diversity and inclusion, bullying prevention, supporting LGBTQ+ youth, building positive relationships, youth leadership, and various forms of art exploration. These topics will be the framework of the Our SPOT curriculum and will be offered to teens in 10-week modules during the school year.
The Our SPOT Teen Program was developed for teens so, it was important that teens had a say in what to name the program and what they wanted in their SPOT rooms. The program was named by LA County teens during March 2019 focus groups to convey how much vulnerable youth need a spot to be with friends. Room designs standards were designed by teens for teens; Furniture that can be moved, electronics and Wi-fi, entertainment space (music area & chalk wall), and a family and community engagement space. New ideas are always considered.
The Our SPOT program was made possible through collaboration with many partners who truly care about our LA County youths and their future. Thanks to the following collaborators for make Our SPOT a spectacular success: Department of Public Health, Substance Abuse and Prevention Control (SAPC), Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services, Human Relations Commission, Department of Mental Health, Probation Department, and Arts Commission.
