NEW OWNERS B
ritish Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML) is pleased to report that it sold Whixall
Marina to Whixall Marina Leisure Ltd, operated by the owners of Grocontinental of Whitchurch, who will be running the Shropshire-based marina based on the Llangollen Canal as Whixall Marina Ltd.
BWML has a portfolio of 19
marinas across England & Wales, covering both inland and coastal locations. Like any business, we constantly review our operations and make decisions which fit with the long-term future we are looking to create for the BWML brand. Our specialism is to manage larger marinas with high volumes of customers. We have development plans we
are looking to take forward, some at existing BWML marinas and others at new sites which have been identified. As a subsidiary of
FOR WHIXALL MARINA
a national charity, we have to be self-sufficient with funding new ventures. This has led us to identify certain smaller marinas in more remote locations which, we believe, would be more successful if they were operated by other owners.Whixall is one such marina and we are delighted that its ownership has now transferred to a local operator. Commented Managing Director of BWML, Jeff Whyatt, ‘Since BWML acquired Whixall in 2007, we have invested and upgraded significantly and are very proud of what Whixall now represents. But we have to be pragmatic and recognise that another operator would be better placed to take it forward through the next stage of its future growth. ‘Our customers can be assured
that our main priority has always been not just the sale but securing Whixall Marina’s future as a great place to moor and that the service boaters receive from us is the
highest throughout our portfolio of marinas.’ David Grocott, Joint Managing
Director of Whixall Marina Leisure Ltd added, ‘We are committed to ensuring continuity of high quality service for BWML’s customers at Whixall Marina, and remain equally committed to improving customers’ mooring experience. The investment made by BWML at Whixall has transformed the marina into a high quality destination for boaters exploring the delights of the picturesque Llangollen Canal. ‘The Marina sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is close to the historic Whixall Moss which, together with its varied wildlife, is an area of international importance.
As local people, we are thrilled
to have the opportunity to now take the Marina forward and be part of its future.’
