A mixed bag for Top 10 Airports in 2019

In 2019, the world’s Top 10 Airports as ranked by total DF&TR sales registered a combined $12.55bn, which represents a very slight -1% decline on the performance in 2018. While this fairly reflects the negative impacts

from adverse macroeconomic conditions for some of the airports in our list – Hong Kong and Dubai International being prime examples – lower than anticipated sales for Tokyo Narita

take into account the early ramifications of coronavirus (Covid-19). As explained on p17, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)

and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) provided retail revenue figures for FY2019/2020, covering the 12-months ending 31 March 2020. While this might not normally influence either’s position by any

meaningful percentage, 2020 is by every parameter a total exception. Taking into account the nosedive in passenger traffic in Q1 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic for both HKIA and Narita, it was not at all surprising to discover that their respective retail figures similarly declined. This not only affected HKIA’s ranking in our table, but it also meant

that the combined sales total for the Top 10 airports was lower overall. In addition, we were only able to collect nine-month sales figures for the new Istanbul Airport, as it only opened in April of 2019. Still, the sales registered in this curtailed period were nevertheless impressive and if the airport had opened just three months earlier we could very well have seen Istanbul much higher up the table.

Covid-19 news content Despite these anomalies, it must be said that the majority of airports in the Top 10 enjoyed solid retail performances in 2019, with more than a couple insisting that their figures were either ‘very good’ (Heathrow and Paris CDG) and even ‘outstanding’ (Incheon). We know next year’s table, which will rank the Top 10

by DF&TR sales in 2020, could look very different to this year’s, reflecting an unprecedented year for travel retail. Taking this into consideration and in a bid to accurately reflect the

constantly evolving global epidemiological situation, TRBusiness has decided to streamline its front section of news pages, to more keenly focus on Covid-19 related stories. This section deals with topics related directly to the impacts of the disease on travel retail, but also includes stories on regions and companies that appear to have survived the peak of the virus and are now on the road to recovery. During this period, TRBusiness has deftly adapted to the changing

landscape with impressive efficiency, creating new products and platforms such as its TRConnect webinar series, TRMarketplace, as well as its ‘Adapt & Survive’ video series. Streamlining our news is just one more way in which the company is striving to deliver relevant and highly valuable content at a time when our readers need it most.

TRMarketplace announces TR Talent Pool Initiative

TRBusiness and Bluedog Productions are proud to announce the creation of the TR Talent Pool Initiative, helping the travel retail industry grow during unprecedented levels of upheaval for its workforce. As the world continues to adjust to a ‘new normal’ courtesy of

the Covid-19 pandemic, the duty free and travel retail industry has already lost many talented and experienced employees through mass redundancies across every sector. While others take advantage of various furlough schemes, some

will be looking outside of the travel and tourism industry for new job opportunities. TRBusiness and Bluedog Productions believe it will be a travesty

to lose such a large volume of skilled professionals – some of whom can boast more than 20 years’ experience in DF&TR – to other industries. We are therefore pledging our support to those who have lost

their jobs in duty free & travel retail – as a result of Covid-19 – by offering free of charge entry to our inaugural TRMarketplace event in September and unlimited access to the platform for a month before to allow them to book meetings with all participants and discuss potential career opportunities. Once inside the platform, these individuals seeking

employment will be easy to identify from our visitors list by the world’s leading operators, airports, airlines, brands and distributors who have already pre-registered. In addition, those looking for career opportunities can reach out

to any of the visitors or exhibitors for video meetings within the platform, share their resumes and discuss job opportunities. On top of this, they will be able to gain unlimited access to our

comprehensive knowledge & insights programme which includes daily webinars covering every product category, sector and region, throughout the event.
