Celebrating Black History Harbison History Day | February 17, 2022


Midlands Technical College’s Harbison Campus is the site of the historic Harbison Institute. The Institute provided access to higher education for African-American students when options were limited. Today, MTC celebrates that legacy as we continue to transform the tomorrows of diverse students from all backgrounds.


1911


Harbison Institute, originally founded in Abbeville, SC moved to the area that is now the MTC Harbison Campus.


1958


The Institute operated until the late 1950s under several names including Harbison College, Harbison Agricultural College, and Harbison Junior College.

1978


The property of Harbison Institute was donated to MTC with the understanding it would be perpetually used for higher education.
