While Argentum’s annual list of the largest providers in senior living saw a number of new companies added to the list, the same 10 providers sit at the top of the list—with a bit of reshuffl ing. Perhaps most notably, Brookdale shed more than 15 percent of its units to optimize its operations yet is still well ahead of the rest of the pack with more than double the number of units of Holiday Retirement, its next-closest competitor. Despite Brookdale’s reduction in units, the list's top 10 companies are only 3,781 units behind their 2018 total units. And, as we’ve seen in past largest providers lists, units shed by one company typically end up somewhere else.
The largest 140 providers off er a total of 624,795 independent living, assisted living, and memory care units. Among just the top 125—the size of the 2018 list—the 2019 list shows growth of 5.4 percent in number of units.
In terms of care type, Brookdale continues to hold the top spot for assisted living and memory care, while Holiday Retirement is the largest independent living provider listed. By a signifi cant margin, Life Care Services has the largest number of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) with 73.
Sunrise continues to be the most aggressive provider in the international space, with 61 communities in Canada and the United Kingdom, followed by Atria Senior Living, with 29 in Canada, and newcomer to the list Meridian Senior Living, with 24 in China.
