The Massachusetts Assisted Living Associ- ation (Mass-ALA) presented several annual awards at its Excellence Awards Dinner in May. The Volunteer Award went to Jay Elias, an attorney who presents a popular monthly lecture program for residents at The Branch- es of North Attleboro. Michelle Tristani, cor- porate director of memory care for Bench- mark, received the Employee Leadership Award for her creation of dozens of educa- tional programs. The California Assisted Living Association (CALA), Argentum’s state partner based in Sacramento, Calif., announced that Chef Mikah Montoya with The Oars Senior Living was awarded the Culinary Knockout Cham- pion recognition. The Culinary Knockout Competition, an event connecting culinary students with senior living executive chefs, was held in April at Sysco’s headquarters. In addition, the association’s quarterly member publication, CALA News & Views magazine, has received two 2019 Hermes Creative Awards for outstanding media concept, writing, and design. Its “Elevate Aging” is- sue won a Platinum award and its workforce development issue a Gold award.

David Laff ey, executive vice president and senior managing director with Des Moines, Iowa-based developer, owner, and operator LCS, has passed away. Laff ey joined LCS in 2009 after spending 11 years with specialty investment bank Ziegler. In addition to serving on the board of managers and audit committee, he held positions on the company’s executive leadership committee, management committee and investment committee and was a member of the American Seniors Housing Association (ASHA).
