Data Tells Compelling Stories and Provides a Glimpse Ahead

“What is valued is measured.” I’ve been running into that phrase often lately, and it applies especially well to this issue of Senior Living Executive, focusing on Finance & Investment. Our annual list of Largest Providers (p.8) has grown to

140, up from 125 in 2018. There are plenty of changes and newcomers, and this year includes a list of the 25 largest not-for-profi ts (p.18), provided by LeadingAge and Ziegler. But there are so many ways to look at data, and each perspective reveals a diff erent valued characteristic. For

instance, the 10 companies at the top of the Largest Providers list didn’t change much—they just changed places. The eight largest REITs (p.23) are the same as in 2018. That tells a story of sustainability and stability. New providers on the list, and more providers exploring the international space (p.16) and eyeing the 55+ market (p.24), tell stories of growth and new ideas. And in the feature article on what’s behind the list (p.7), leaders tell their stories of solutions and challenges. It’s a look into the future that will get you thinking. One of these challenges is cost. “The Forgotten Middle” study from NIC and

NORC raised concerns about how a growing middle-income group might aff ord senior living. But this market also represents an opportunity (p.26). Another challenge-turned-opportunity is in sustainability, diversity, and transparency. What was once seen as simply a good thing to do is now driving investor decisions and solid returns, when it’s measured as an ESG rating. REITs and experts explain what this means, and how communities can help (p.46). Finally, you’ll soon, you’ll see more details on our work to develop voluntary, consensus-based standards for the senior living industry. Development of industry standards is among the most common and benefi cial activities for professional associations—but it’s also a deeply involved process. It’s been a collaborative eff ort of Argentum’s volunteer leaders and staff , as well as subject matter experts from related industries. We’re putting together material that addresses key issues in senior living, and we need your help. Sign up on seniorlivingiq.org, and you’ll get notices when it’s time to weigh in and share your expertise.
